CHAPTER 101
GABRIELLE’S POV
This isn’t over.
Those were the last words Anya had said to me before leaving with Lila three nights ago.
Meanwhile, things between Damon and me had gotten pretty… heated in all the right ways. I was the first thing he reached for every night when he came home from work, and the last thing in the morning before he left again.
I was on my back, folded like a pretzel and thrown every which way, and I definitely wasn’t complaining.
But I also wasn’t ready to be a mother.
And that meant I had to be on birth control.
I scrolled through my phone, reading the pros and cons of each option. Ultimately, I’d have to go for a consultation first, but it felt like less of a hassle if I knew what I was getting into beforehand.
“Hello?” I heard a voice say before my phone was snatched from my hand. “Girl, were you even listening to me?”
My head shot up. “I was, Fiorella. Give me my phone back.”
“Or what?” She retorted, glancing at the screen. “What are you doing that caught all your attention?”
I reached for my phone, snatching it back from her hands but it was too late. She had already seen enough to know what I was doing.
Her eyes widened. “Birth control? Does that mean… are you already…?”
I wanted the ground to open up and swallow me which was weird because I had no issues telling her about my sex life when
Damon wouldn’t touch me.
I had even asked her for advice.
I inhaled deeply. “Yes. We’ve… done it.”
Amusement swirled in her eyes. “And raw too? Oh, you dirty girl.”
My face flushed as I picked up a pillow and threw it at her arm. “Shut up.”
Fiorella laughed, flopping onto the bed beside me. “I leave you alone for five minutes with Damon and suddenly we’re Googling contraceptives.”
“It’s not like that,” I muttered, even though it very much was. “I just… I’m not ready for a baby. Not yet. And I don’t think it’s something I could have with Damon, considering the situation.”
Her expression softened, the teasing expression giving way to a more thoughtful one. “You still feel your marriage won’t last past a year?”
I shook my head slowly. “It doesn’t matter what I feel. I have to keep it in mind, else I set myself up for disappointment.”
She nodded, her hands reaching for mine. “That’s normal, Gabby. Especially with everything going on. You’re allowed to enjoy being married without turning it into a lifetime commitment overnight.”
I stared at her. “What if he wants that? A family. Soon.”
Fiorella tilted her head, studying me. “Has he said that?”
“No,” I admitted. “But Damon is… calculated about everything. Wouldn’t he be suggesting protection or pills if he didn’t want a child?”

“I guess you’d have to ask him to know,”
Dread coiled in my stomach.
Asking Damon il he wanted a child with me was the scariest thing to do. Especially as he could react a thousand ways.
“And that scares you.”
I nodded slowly. “A little.”
She bumped her shoulder against mine. “Fuck it. Just talk to him. Or at least talk to a doctor first before you spiral.”
I exhaled a quiet laugh. “You make it sound so easy.”
“It is,” she said lightly. “You’re just overthinking it again. My honest advice, if you’re not sure of your place in his life then you shouldn’t have a baby yet.”
That made sense.
I wouldn’t want to have a child with someone who couldn’t love me. And with Damon being emotionally numb, I couldn’t count
on that.
He already told me he couldn’t give me anything more.
My heart squeezed as I spoke. “You’re right. Beatrice thinks I plan to trap him with a baby.”
She nodded slowly, studying me. “Do you?”
I scoffed. “Of course, not.”
That was true.
“Then you’d better get that birth control or at least, talk to him,” she said, standing up from the bed. “And fast.”
I nodded, watching her walk out of my bedroom. Immediately I was alone I brought out a laptop from under my pillow and opened it.
There was a draft sitting there, a few pages of something I’d been writing for some days now. I continued typing for a few minutes before my phone rang.
The caller ID was unfamiliar so I decided not to pick up.
But then, it rang again.
When I didnpick up for the second and third time, a text came through:
Don’t be a bitch. Pick up my calls, I need Emily to send money to my lawyer before my court hearing.
My chest tightened.
It was Jared reaching out to me with an unknown number. I immediately blocked him but seconds later, another call came in from a different number.
Sweat beaded my forehead.
I almost hurled my phone across the room but decided against that and pushed it under the pillow. At the same time, the door was pushed open and Damon walked in.
He paused when our eyes met.
“Oh… hey,” I said, a pathetic attempt at acting normal. “Welcome home.”

Welcome home?
What the fuck was that?
His eyes darted to my pillow and back to my face. “What were you doing?”
I blinked, closing the laptop and laughing awkwardly. “Uhm, nothing. I’m doing absolutely nothing.”
He stepped fully into my room and shut the door behind him. He was wearing a casual outfit–black jeans, a white top, and sneakers–which meant he freshened up before coming to see me.
In his hand was an orange Hermes shopping bag.
He dropped it on the bed and sat beside me. “Are you hiding something from me,
Oh, god yes, I was.
But I didn’t say that.
wife?”
If he found out Jared was still reaching out to me he’d flip and I wasn’t ready to deal with that anytime soon.
I cleared my throat unnecessarily. “No, I’m not. I’m just bored. What’s in the bag?”
His eyes narrowed at me but he didn’t press. “I saw you drooling over a Birkin last night in bed. I had one custom–made for you.”
My heart swelled.
I had thought he was asleep the whole time. Not only did he get it without me having to ask, but he got it custom–made in such a
short time.
I leapt into his arms before I could stop myself.
He caught me easily, one arm wrapping around my waist while the other held the bag before it slid off the bed.
For a split second, he stiffened–like he always did when I got physical without warning–but then he relaxed, his hand settling flat against my lower back.
“Easy,” he murmured, half amused. “You’ll knock me over one day.”
“I don’t care,” I said into his shoulder, my voice muffled. “Thank you, husband.”
