GABRIELLE’S POV
“Why do you have to leave?” I asked, blinking up at him. “I thought you were going to stay with me today.”
He shook his head, staring at me without the warmth from earlier. “I have to be somewhere else, Gabrielle. It’s a matter of life and death.”
I moved to sit upright but he reached out and held me down before I could.
“Are you in trouble?” I asked, looking around before bringing my voice down to a whisper. “Is this about last night?”
His jaw tightened, and for a second, I saw something flicker behind his eyes. “No,” he said finally. “Last night is handled.”
The way he said it made my stomach twist.
“Then what?” I pressed. “You said life and death.”
He exhaled slowly, brushing his thumb across my cheek like he was memorizing my face. “There are things you don’t need to worry about.”
“That’s not fair,” I whispered. “I’m your wife.”
His gaze sharpened at that. “I know exactly what you are,” he said calmly. “Which is why I’m asking you to stay out of this.”
A chill crept up my spine.
He sat down again and leaned so close I could feel his breath on my face. “Look, I’ll try to explain as best I can when I get back. Susan and the nurse will stay with you until then.”
My heart began thudding wildly.
The thought of Damon being in a life or death situation didn’t sit right with me.
My eyes searched his. “Is someone coming for you?”
He hesitated, then shook his head. “I’ll be fine. Stay in the house, okay? I’ll be back in a little while.”
Then he leaned down and captured my lips with his. I moaned into his mouth and wrapped my arms around his neck, my tired body coming alive again.
God, I wanted him so bad.
It was impossible to not be all over him every time.
He broke the kiss before it could go any further and stood up. “Rest now. I’ll handle everything.”
I nodded, my heart in my throat as I watched him go.
He got to the door when Fiorella pushed it open. She greeted him and he huffed a response before walking out.
“I’m so sorry for coming in late, Gabby,” she said as she pulled me into a hug. “I came as fast as I could.”
I held onto her a little tighter than I meant to.
“It’s fine,” I murmured, though my voice didn’t sound convincing even to me.
Fiorella pulled back just enough to study my face.
Her brows knitted together immediately. “I checked in with the doctor on my way in. Are they certain it’s just stress?”
“What else could it be?”

Her eyes narrowed, but before she could speak, the door pushed open, and the doctor, accompanied by a nurse, walked in.
“We have to check your vitals one more time before you leave,” the doctor said. “Are you ready?”
I sighed, nodded and pushed Fiorella’s words down as they began.
I was moved back to the house later in the evening, and when I walked in, the entire staff was waiting outside for me.
I hadn’t expected anything like that.
They stood in a neat line by the entrance, their expressions tense and almost guilty, as if they had personally failed me.
For a second, I just stared at them, my throat turning tight immediately.
They spoke in unison. “Welcome back, ma’am.”
I felt a sting behind my eyes.
They weren’t just greeting me, they seemed relieved that I was fine and that did something to me.
I swallowed hard and forced a smile onto my face. “Why are you all standing like I’ve been gone for months?”
A few of them laughed nervously.
“You scared us,” one of the girls admitted quietly.
That nearly broke me.
I blinked fast and looked up at the ceiling briefly, pretending to admire the chandelier like it had suddenly become fascinating.
I was not going to cry in front of everyone.
“I’m fine,” I said lightly. “It was just stress. I promise I’m not planning on collapsing again anytime soon.”
Susan’s lips pressed into a thin line. “You should still rest.”
“Yes, ma’am,” another girl added quickly.
That did it.
It never took too much to make me emotional and I hadn’t realized that they cared about me.
I pressed my nails lightly into my palm to ground myself and smiled again, softer this time.
“Thank you,” I said quietly. “All of you. You can return to your duties now.”
As they slowly dispersed, I turned toward the staircase.
I was halfway up the stairs with the assistance of Susan and my nurse when I heard a voice I wished I hadn’t behind me.
“Oh, Gabby,” she said, fake concern in her voice. “I heard you almost died.”
I turned and Selene was standing there.
Even though I hated to admit it, she looked as elegant as ever. Her eye sparkled and I could tell her visit was more than just checking in on me.
I turned to Susan and the nurse. “Give us some privacy but stay close. I’ll need you again soon.”
They nodded and walked away.

Selene walked up the staircase. “I can assist you. I can take you to your room while we talk.”
I hesitated but gave in when I realized I was too weak to stand on my own. I needed to lean on someone or lie on my bed before
my knees gave up.
“Fine.”
We got bedroom, and she helped me to my bed. Relief flooded through me as I lay down because I was already feeling dizzy again.
“Are you comfortable?” Selene asked.
“Yes,”
“Good,” she said. “Because you need to be comfortable to hear what I’m about to say.”
I almost rolled my eyes at her. “What do you want, Selene? And before you say anything, please know that I’m not in the mood for your lies.”
She smiled and sat on the couch beside the bed. “You never did thank me for helping you last night.”
It was in that moment I remembered that Selene had warned me about the attack but I didn’t bother to listen to her, dismissing
it as another one of her lies.
My chest tightened. “How did you know it was going to happen?”
Her smile widened. “That doesn’t matter for now. Have you seen Damon since he left the hospital this morning?”
I could feel something bad was coming, but I couldn’t place it. Selene wouldn’t be smiling like that unless she knew something I
didn’t.
My mind went back to my last conversation with Damon.
Was he hurt?
No, he wasn’t.
Selene wouldn’t be smiling if he were.
I pushed the thoughts down and exhaled. “No, I haven’t seen him.”
She blew imaginary dust from her nails. “I thought as much. He won’t be coming home anytime soon but just in case he does, I will tell you what happened.”
“And why the fuck would I believe anything you say?” I asked. “You told me that he was still in love with you but it was a lie.”
“And you think it was a lie because he’s in love with you?” She asked.
That made me pause.
I swallowed. “I know it was a lie because he said so. He’d never lie to me.”
“Aww, you can’t even confidently say he loves you,” she said, her smile growing even wider. “What a pity, isn’t it?”
I could tell that made her feel better about herself but she was right. I had no idea what he felt for me. I had no idea what he felt
at all.
And the suspense was killing me.
“Go to the fucking point, Selene,” I said harsher than I would have liked.
Her eyes snapped back to me. “If you say so. Here,” she said softly. “Watch.”

She held out her phone.
I didn’t take it immediately.
Something in her eyes told me that once I accepted it, I wouldn’t be able to go back. But slowly, I took it with a shaky hand.
On the screen was a paused video so I clicked on it.
The footage was a bit blurry, like it was CCTV footage but I could clearly see Damon and a chubby man I’d never met before.
“No one has captured my heart,” Damon said. “I couldn’t give a fuck about her even if I wanted to. But you’re not taking her.”
What?
I didn’t have time to process it because the other man was speaking.
“Why? I don’t believe a pussy is that good.”
I heard laughter from people I could see in the video. That meant that they weren’t alone in the room.
“No,” Damon said. “I don’t share my toys until I’m done with them.”
The video ended and the room suddenly felt too small.
I couldn’t hear anything except the sound of my own breathing. I stared at the screen, waiting for him to laugh and say it was a joke, but he didn’t.
“This is fake,” I said, but my voice didn’t sound like mine.
She didn’t respond and with a smile, she scrolled to the next video of them. In it, Damon was still wearing the suit he had on this morning.
“My brother is dead,” Damon said. “And as for my wife, she’s still interesting to me and that’s why I keep her around. I
and I intend to see it through, not because I give a fuck about her.”
