CHAPTER 151
GABRIELLE’S POV
His voice was barely audible, but it shattered every thought in my head.
“Damon?”
My legs moved before my brain could catch up. I rushed to the side of the bed and grabbed his hand.
“Damon,” I breathed, my vision blurring with tears of joy instantly.
His fingers curled tightly around mine for someone who had just woken up from surgery, like he was afraid I might disappear if he let go.
“I’m here,” I whispered. “I’m right here.”
The nurse gasped softly behind me.
“Oh- one moment.” She quickly moved to the monitors, checking the readings before leaning closer to Damon. “Sir? Can you hear me?”
Damon didn’t take his eyes off me.
They were glassy with pain and exhaustion, but focused on me.
“Yes,” he rasped.
The sound of his voice made something inside my chest break open. I hadn’t realized how terrified I’d been of never hearing his voice again.
The nurse pressed a button on the wall. “I’m calling the doctor.”
Within minutes the room was filled with activity.
Two nurses and the doctor from earlier stepped inside.
The doctor approached the bed and checked the monitors before shining a small light into Damon’s eyes.
“Mr. Gravari,” she said calmly. “Can you tell me where you are?”
Damon’s brow furrowed slightly. “Hospital.”
“Good,” she said. “And do you know why you’re here?”
His gaze flickered briefly to the bandages on his chest before returning to me. “I was shot.”
The doctor nodded with clear satisfaction. “That’s correct.”
I stared at her in disbelief. “You mean… he’s okay?”
She gave me a small smile. “He’s doing remarkably well. Especially considering the extent of his injuries.”
My throat tightened.
“You said it might take weeks to years for him to wake up.”
“Yes,” she said, her smile still in place. “But sometimes the body surprises us.”
My eyes moved back to Damon.
He was still staring at me like I was the only thing keeping him tethered to this world.

“Water,” he whispered hoarsely.
The nurse immediately poured a small amount into a cup and handed it to me.
I took it and held the straw to his lips with shaky hands.
“Small sips,” she instructed.
Damon drank slowly, his throat moving as he swallowed. Even something as simple as that felt like a miracle.
The doctor checked his pulse again.
“His vitals are stable,” she said. “We’ll continue monitoring him closely, but this is a very good sign.”
Relief hit me so suddenly that my knees almost gave out.
The nurse noticed and quickly guided me into the chair beside the bed.
I barely registered anything else in the room.
My eyes never left Damon.
Less than a day ago he had been unconscious on an operating table, and his life was hanging by a thread.
And even after he survived that, they told me it could take weeks, months, or maybe even years to wake up.
But now, he was here.
Awake.
d looking at me like he had just crawled out of hell to find me again.
shand reached up to cup my cheek. “Gabrielle.”
I closed my eyes briefly and leaned into his palm, feeling his warmth comforting me.
I opened my eyes and wiped the tears away from the side of his face. I was surprised by them, but I knew now was not the time to ask him questions.
Maybe getting shot so close to the heart had finally broken through the cracks in his walls.
I let out a broken sob. “Damon. I always knew you’d never leave me.”
He swallowed hard, as if talking was painful. “I’m not going anywhere.”
Tears blurred my vision again.
I felt hands on my shoulders before I heard the doctor’s voice.
“He shouldn’t be talking too much more, ma’am,” she said, trying to pull me away from him. “Please… let him rest.”
Damon’s fingers tightened around my wrist before the doctor could pull me any farther away.
“Wait,” he rasped. “No.”
The doctor sighed softly but paused.
His eyes were still locked on mine, desperate and searching, like he needed to make sure I was real.
“You’re… okay?” he asked, his voice rough and fragile, “What’s wrong?”
Even in his condition, all he cared about was me.

My heart swelled. “I’m fine,” I whispered quickly, nodding through my tears. “I’m right here.”
His gaze moved slowly over my face, like he was memorizing every detail. Only then did some of the tension leave his body.
The doctor stepped forward again, checking his monitors and adjusting the IV line.
“Mr. Gravari, your body has been through a severe trauma,” she said gently. “You woke up much sooner than we expected, which is good news. But you need to rest so your body can continue healing.”
Damon didn’t answer.
He still held on to me.
The doctor gave me a look that clearly meant, ‘Help me out here.‘
“Damon,” I said softly, brushing my thumb over his knuckles. “She’s right. You need to rest.”
His jaw tightened slightly, like he hated the idea of letting go. Then his eyes flicked down slowly to my stomach.
His brows drew together faintly, and something like panic flashed in his eyes.
“Baby?” he croaked.
My breath caught.
“Yes,” I said quickly, squeezing his hand. “The baby’s fine. I’m fine. Everything’s okay.”
The tension drained from his face so suddenly that it made my throat tighten again.
He closed his eyes briefly, exhaling a shaky breath.
When he opened them again, they were fixed on me. “Stay,” he whispered. “Please.”
My heart cracked open all over again. “Of course, I will. You don’t even have to ask.”
The doctor sighed and stepped back, probably exhausted but finally giving up on separating us.
I sat there in silence, holding his hand and gently rubbing his temples.
With a heart full of love and relief, I watched as he slowly drifted under again.

By the time Damon woke up again, I had already freshened up, eaten, and seen my OB–GYN.
I had a feeling he would not be happy if he found out I’d been neglecting myself just to focus on him.
Words couldn’t describe how happy I was.
Damon was sitting up, a pillow behind his back and the nurse was just finishing his bed bath when I walked into his room.
His eyes met mine immediately.
His hand reached out for me. “Come here, wife.”
I obeyed without hesitation, taking his hand as I sat on the chair beside his bed.
“I’m so happy you’re finally awake,” I said, my gaze dropping briefly to the bandages wrapped around his chest “You scared
me.”
His thumb brushed slowly across my hand. Then he raised it to his lips and pressed a kiss to the back.
Heat rushed through me shamelessly.

“I know, cara,” he said hoarsely, then his voice softened. “I’m sorry.”
I shook my head quickly. “Don’t apologize for getting shot, Damon. You saved my life. Again.”
A faint shadow of a smile appeared at the corner of his mouth. “Fair point.”
There was so much to talk about, but I felt it was too early, and it would exhaust him.
He needed to know about Rocco’s threats but I didn’t want him slipping back into shock or whatever the doctor called it.
My eyes landed on the steaming bowl of soup beside his bed.
His eyes followed mine before looking back at me. “You’re feeding me.”
It wasn’t a question.
I blinked. “What?”
His grip on my hand tightened slightly.
