CHAPTER 162
GABRIELLE’S POV
The look on Damon’s face when I pulled away from him made me regret hitting him.
He looked utterly confused.
“Why would something happen to me?” he asked.
My throat felt tight. “Because your lawyer was here and we spent the entire day signing your trusts in my name.”
The confusion cleared from his expression.
“I should have said something but I forgot I called him,” he said, pulling me into a hug. “I’m sorry, wife.”
Now I felt even worse.
A gasp escaped my mouth when he suddenly carried me in his arms bridal style and walked into the house.
I wrapped my arms around his neck.
“What are you doing?” I asked, trying to hide the smile tugging at my lips.
“Taking my wife inside,” he said calmly.
“You could have just walked like a normal person.”
“I could have,” he replied, “but I missed you.”
My cheeks warmed. “You were gone for only the day.”
“It’s still a day too long.”
nd rested my head against his shoulder.
that had been sitting in my chest all day slowly began to ease.
had felt empty without him in it.
quiet in a way that made my thoughts spiral into places I did not want them to go.
Damon carried me through the living room and up the stairs without slowing.
“I have a secret to tell you,” I said softly. “Well, two secrets.”
His eyes fell on me. “Tell me.”
“I have always found you sexier you’re tired from the day,” I said, trying so hard not to blush.
And failing.
“There’s this tired look in your eyes,” I continued, tracing a finger lightly along his jaw. “Like you’ve had a long day and you’re barely holding it together. I don’t know why, but it makes you… unfairly attractive.”
Damon huffed out a quiet laugh. “Wow. That is a lovely confession.”
“I said it was a secret,” I muttered.
He pushed the bedroom door open with his shoulder and stepped inside, still holding me.
“You said there were two,” he reminded me.

“Oh.” I hesitated.
Damon set me down gently on the edge of the bed, but he didn’t move away. His hands rested on my waist and his eyes searched my face.
“What’s the second one?” he asked.
I looked down at his shirt and frowned. “Damon…”
“Yes?”
“There’s blood on your shirt.”
He followed my gaze and looked down at himself like he had only just noticed. “It’s not mine.”
That did not make me feel better.
My stomach tightened. “What happened?”
He studied my face carefully, as if he were deciding how much to tell me.
“Don’t hide it from me,” I said. “Tell me exactly what happened.”
Damon exhaled slowly. “Rhys killed Rocco’s son.”
My breath caught. “What?”
“Rocco has the upper hand for as long as we stay here,” he said. “We need to go back home for now.”
I looked down at my hands, trying to process what that meant for us.
“How could he do something like that without telling you?”
Damon stood up and took off his jacket. “I don’t want to waste time telling him how he shouldn’t have done what he already has.”
kept the jacket on the couch nearby and started undoing his shirt.
need to leave,” he said. “The weather is good enough for a flight tonight. I’m not sure it would be by morning. Don’t ther packing.”
sat on the bed frozen.
Rocco already sounded pissed when we spoke on the phone.
By that time he realized someone associated with Damon had killed his son, he’d lose his mind.
“I will be his first suspect,” Damon said. “And he’ll try to hurt me back. That’s why we need to leave.”
My legs finally moved.
“I’m ready to go now,” I said, looking down at my robe that I didn’t care to change out of. “Let’s get out of here.”
My voice sounded shaky.
Damon noticed and stepped closer. “Hey, don’t worry. I have a plan that will work, but it requires considerable effort and patience. It will most importantly, require trust.”
I clung to him, my mind racing with possibilities of our future. “You know I trust you completely, Damon.”
“I know,” he responded, brushing my cheek before dropping his hand by his side. “So tell me the second secret.”
I hesitated.

Suddenly the floot seemed very interesting to look at
“Well… it’s not exactly a secret,” I said slowly. “More like… something I did.”
Damon’s brows lifted slightly. “That sounds dangerous already.”
It wasn’t dangerous.”
He crossed his arms lightly. “Gabrielle,”
I sighed.
“Fine,” I muttered. “When your lawyer came today and we were signing the documents… I made one small change.”
His expression didn’t shift, but I could feel his attention sharpen. “What kind of change?”
I twisted my fingers together. “I removed Beatrice from your monthly beneficiaries.”
Silence followed.
“I know I probably shouldn’t have done that without asking you first,” I rushed out. “But after everything she did and the way she treated me–”
Damon shook his head and stepped closer before I could finish.
Then he leaned down and kissed me.
The suddenness of it stole the rest of my words, and my breath away.
When he pulled back, I stared at him in confusion. “You’re… not mad?”
He looked almost amused. “No.”
“That’s it?” I blinked. “You’re just not mad?”
He reached out and brushed a strand of hair behind my ear.
“I don’t care,” he said calmly. “It’s long overdue anyway. She stopped being my responsibility a long time ago.”
Relief rushed through me so quickly that my shoulders sagged.
“Before we leave there is something I need to discuss with you,” he said, pulling me to sit on the bed. “Rocco will most likely follow us back.”
His expression hardened, the softness completely gone now.
“And we’ll be ready for him.”
I woke slowly, the softness of the sheets and the faint scent of Damon pulling me fully back to consciousness.
I lay there on the bed, staring at the ceiling as memories slipped into place.
I remembered Rhys coming along, and trying to convince us he could fly the private plane.
We refused, of course.
I remembered Damon’s arms around me, and the intimacy of being tangled together during the flight back home.
A small smile tugged at my lips.
I turned my head and looked around the room.
CHAPTER 162
It was Damon’s.
And it was still the same.
The same dark wood furniture, the tall windows that let in pale morning light, and the heavy drawn.
And the bed.
My cheeks warmed as my gaze fell on it.
The one he took my virginity in.
The memory came back so clearly that it made my stomach flutter.
I pushed myself up slowly, the sheets sliding down my shoulders as I looked around again.
“Damon?” I called out.
No response.
I swung my legs over the side of the bed and stood, wrapping a silk robe loosely around myself as I walk
I could hear faint noises downstairs.
When I got there, I noticed Lila sitting on the couch, watching an animated movie.
Damon was sitting beside her.
Or rather… slumped beside her.
His head was tilted back against the couch, his arms crossed loosely over his chest, and his eyes were closed.
He was sleeping.
Yet somehow-
“Daddy,” Lila said without looking at him, “why is the dragon helping the bad guy now?”
Damon made a low sound, like he had been dragged halfway out of sleep.
“Because,” he murmured lazily, “the dragon thinks the bad guy is the hero.”
It was obvious all he wanted to do was sleep, but he also wanted to spend time with his daughter.
My heart swelled.
He kept responding to her questions, still half asleep.
I tried to laugh quietly but Lila heard me.
She turned her head and her eyes landed on me. Maybe I was still drowsy from sleep, but I thought I saw warmth in them.
“Hi, Lila,” I said softly.
She hesitated, but responded at the last minute. “Hi.”
Hope stirred in my chest.
Maybe things weren’t completely broken between us.
“It’s a good thing you’re back,” I heard a voice beside me. “We have to talk about something important, Gabrielle.”

I didn’t need to turn to know it was Anya.
I thought she would have returned to her own house by now, but of course, she hadn’t.
The warmth in Lila’s eyes disappeared.
Her expression hardened almost immediately, the small softness in her face vanishing as if it had never been there.
Without sparing me another glance, she looked away,
I always knew Anya had to be behind Lila’s sudden change toward me, but this confirmed it without a doubt.
I made a mental note to mention my suspicions to Damon later.
“You want to talk?” I asked, finally turning to look at her. “Fine. But I’m done with your games. And you’re going to listen to me too.”
