CHAPTER 163
GABRIELLE’S POV
It was obvious Anya wasn’t expecting that response from me by the look on her face.
My eyes fell on a document in her hand. “What’s that?”
She caught herself quickly, and handed it over to me. “This came in for you over a month ago. I had to hold on to it for safekeeping”
Hesitantly, I took the document from her.
The paper felt heavier than it should have.
My name was written neatly across the front, and beneath it was the name of a law firm I recognized.
It was a divorce paper.
My breath caught in my throat.
I held on to it with more force than necessary, my fingers tightening around the edges as I opened it.
The name at the top sent a chill down my spine.
Damon Gravari was the petitioner
My eyes skimmed the page again, slower this time, like maybe I had read it wrong the first time.
But the words didn’t change
Dissolution of marriage.
I looked up sloty. “Why do you have this
“For safekeeping,” she answered, unable to hide the excitement in her voice. “You’re welcome.”
My chest tightened. “You know that wasn’t what I meant.”
Anya shrugged lightly, like the answer was obvious. “it was delivered here. In case you haven’t noticed, your year with Damon is coming to an end soon.*
My pulse began to thad in my ears.
I had totally forgotten that our marriage was only supposed to last a year.
I stared at the paper again, at Damon still sleeping on the couch, then back at her. “You expect me to believe my husband filed for divorce and forgot to tell me?”
Anya’s lips curved faintly. “I didn’t say he forgot,”
Something ugly twisted in my stomach.
“Then what are you saying?”
She tilted her head slightly. “Maybe he just didn’t want to deal with the tears that would follow. If you check, you can see his signature at the bottom.”
I turned the page and glanced through it.
She was right.
His signature was boldly placed at the bottom of the page.

All I had to do was sign it and he’d stop being my husband.
My heart clenched. “If my husband wants a divorce I believe he should have no problem saying it to my face.”
Her brows lifted slightly. “What the hell is your problem? He’s done with you, can’t you see that? Why don’t you just leave our family alone?”
My head snapped up. “Our family?”
She glanced at Lila, then gave me a look before folding her arms across her chest.
That told me everything I needed to know.
I folded the document slowly and carefully, like the paper might tear if I moved it too fast.
“It might not be my place to say this,” I said slowly, my gaze holding hers. “But you’re a bad mother to keep using your child.”
Her smile disappeared and a scowl–well, an attempted one–took its place.
“We get it,” I continued, suddenly feeling an indescribable amount of anger surge through me. “You’re the mother of his child. We get it! But still, stop using her to gain some form of control.”
The slight rise in my tone made her flinch.
“Just because you can doesn’t mean you should have kids,” I added. “And you’re a walking proof of that.”
Anya’s expression hardened immediately.
“Don’t you dare judge my parenting,” she said sharply. “You have no idea what I go through.”
‘t judging,” I replied calmly. “I was only stating a fact.”

eyes flashed. “Your child?”
all smile formed on my lips. “Yes, my child. I’m pregnant with Damon’s baby.”
e horrified look on her face filled me with immense satisfaction.
nya stared at me like the words refused to settle in her head.
We’re having a baby?”
We both turned at the sound of Lila’s voice.
I smiled at her. “Yes, sweetie. You’ll have a baby brother or sister soon.”
I saw excitement flash in her eyes, but it died down when Anya spoke.

“Go upstairs,” she told Lila quickly. “You shouldn’t be eavesdropping on adult’s conversations.”
“But I only want to watch my movie,” Lila whined.
Anya forced a tight smile. “Go. Now. Or you’ll wake your father.”
Lila hesitated, a sad expression on her face.
Then she stood and walked past us toward the stairs.
But before she disappeared, she glanced at me, then at my stomach, and smiled back.
My heart fluttered.
“You’re lying,” Anya finally said, dragging my attention back to her.
Her voice was sharp, but I could hear the crack in it.
I shrugged lightly. “Believe whatever makes you feel better. But trust me, I didn’t use this baby to keep him. In fact, I didn’t even want him to know that I was pregnant.”
Her eyes dropped immediately to my stomach.
I wasn’t showing yet, and I saw how that made doubt creep into her expression.
“This is just one of your tricks,” she snapped. “Even with the baby, he’s not going to stay married to you for more than a year.”
