CHAPTER TWENTY–NINE
GABRIELLE’S POV
I pushed at his chest, but he didn’t move. His body heat trapped me, and the music from the bar still thumped faintly through
the walls.
“You don’t own me,” I said.
“No?” he murmured, tilting my chin up. “But you wanted me to see you. Didn’t you?”
“You don’t get to act jealous,” I snapped. “You left me waiting all night and you claimed it wasn’t a big deal. Now you’re being possessive?”
“You were supposed to stay out of this world,” he said, his voice rougher now. “You think it’s a game?”
“Oh, please,” I said, my throat tight. “I’m a virgin not a prude. I know about drugs, strippers, and sex.”
His eyes darkened. “That’s not all this place is. That’s what I came here for last night. To cut my ties with them.”
My mouth parted but no words came out.
“And now that I just hauled a man across the room for you, they know you’re special to me,” he said, his voice tight. “Do you realize how much danger that puts you in?”
My anger dimmed, replaced by something soft. I stared at him, trying to steady my breathing.
“I’m special to you?” I asked.
He pulled away from me and sat on the couch, his expression turning cold again. “We might as well have some fun while you’re here. So please, go on. You have my full attention now.”
“So that’s my fault now?” I asked. “You didn’t tell me anything, Damon. You left me in a hotel with no call, no message, nothing. What was I supposed to think?”
“You should have minded your own business,” he said, bored. “You’re stalling, love. Dance.”
I held onto the pole but my feet were frozen on the floor.
He leaned back, his arm resting over the couch.
“You wanted this,” he said. “Now finish it.”
I looked at him, at the faint bruise on his knuckle from throwing that man. His face was calm, but his eyes gave him away.
They burned on my body with so much intensity that it made my knees weak.
The music from outside leaked faintly through the walls. I moved, slow at first, testing my balance. His gaze followed me as I turned. I could feel it crawl over my skin.
I lifted myself off the ground, my body brushing the pole as I turned again and wrapped my legs around it. I held his gaze as I moved.
His hand tightened on his knee, but he didn’t speak. His restraint was slipping. I saw the tension in his jaw and heard the sharp breath he took when I slid down the pole again.
I let my heels touch the floor and rolled my hips, never breaking eye contact. The air between us grew heavier with every beat of the muffled music.
He stood slowly, his gaze still locked on mine.
“That’s enough,” he said.

I tilted my head. “You told me to finish.”
His voice dropped. “I didn’t think you would.”
My body was a wreck of nerves but I didn’t show it.
I walked toward him, my heartbeat too loud in my ears. “Then maybe you don’t know me as well as you think.”
He stepped forward until the space between us disappeared. “We’re leaving.”
I touched his arm, my fingers sliding down lightly. “So you admit that it affected you?”
He hesitated. “Yes, it did because it was you. Now, let’s go.”
A satisfied smile curled on my lips.
He sighed and muttered under his breath. “You’re spoilt.”
Damon took off his jacket and placed them over my shoulders. I felt his warmth in the fabric and smelled his cologne.
Then he held my hands as we walked out to the car.
“By the way, we still have an event to attend tonight,” he said when we got in.
I turned. “What event?”
“It’s a charity event hosted by an old family friend,” he said, already on his phone. “You are going to meet a lot of people from my past there.”
In other words, go all out.
I intended to.

The room buzzed with activities.
I hired a style team online and in less than an hour, they were already at the suite. Luckily, the vision for my dress was similar to an already–made one.
They just had to customize some details.
My hair was in a blowout look. I wore a red lace dress with an off–shoulder neckline and long sleeves. It had a high slit on the left side and a long train.
The fabric was sheer, revealing my entire body except my privates but my cleavage was accentuated. I paired it with black platform heels and large earrings.
I wore a bold red lip as the cherry on top.
“Perfect,” the stylist said, stepping back to admire her work.
A knock came on the door.
I turned to the mirror one last time and smiled faintly at my reflection.
“Come in,” I said.
The door opened, and Damon stepped in, dressed in a black suit. His hair was styled but slightly tossed over his face, and his eyes swept over me slowly, taking everything in.
“You look gorgeous,” he said, unable to take his eyes off me.

“Thanks,” I responded. “I’m ready.”

I finished up with the team and paid them before we left for the event. The car ride there was quiet, at least between us.
Damon stayed on the phone, speaking languages I couldn’t understand. He finally ended the call when the car stopped.
Fortunately, there were no cameras as it was a private event.
The car stopped in front of a glass building with gold lights lining the entrance. The sound of faint music drifted out when the doors opened.
Damon got out first and offered his hand. I placed mine in his, stepping out carefully so the slit of my dress didn’t ride up too far. His grip tightened slightly as if he didn’t trust the world to look at me.
Inside, the atmosphere was warm and expensive. People in designer clothes mingled with glasses of champagne in hand, their laughters soft and pretentious.
A jazz band played in the corner while waiters passed trays of caviar and oysters.
A middle–aged man walked up to us. “Gravari. I didn’t think I’d see you here again so soon.”
Damon’s hand pressed lightly on my back. “It’s nice to see you, Uncle Joe.”
Joe’s eyes flicked to me, lingering a second too long. “Ah, yes. Who’s this beautiful woman?”
“My wife, Gabrielle,” Damon introduced me.
“Nice to see you,” I said smoothly.
“Likewise,” Joe replied, then looked at Damon. “I need to bring this drink back to my wife, your aunt. We should catch up soon.”
Damon nodded. “Looking forward to that.”
