Poor?Martha cut in with a laugh. Don’t hurt your head guessing. I’m his maternal grandmother. His father’s side is the side with all the money.

I straightened. I’m asking how you’re a gold digger when your grandson is a billionaire.

Her smile faded and Damon stiffened beside me.

Can’t a girl be an entrepreneur? She asked, her smile coming back. Besides, I like how I’m living. But I see why everybody hates the guy.

I leaned closer. I believe you could do better than that. You could get another rich old man, not that.

If it’s any consolation, I’ll get someone better and younger when he dies and leaves all his money to me,she winked at me.

Damon’s phone rang in his pocket and he excused himself to pick it up.

I cleared my throat. You didn’t answer my question. Damon can give you whatever you ask for. Why are you doing this?

I don’t want any of his stained money,Martha said as he walked away, her eyes filled with pain. You think men of his wealth

and affluence don’t have skeletons in their closets?

What do you mean?

Martha looked around to make sure no one was listening before leaning closer. Her perfume was soft and expensive. Her hand

rested on mine on the table.

They build empires on blood, sweetheart, she said quietly. Old money doesn’t stay clean for generations. It gets passed through hands dirtier than you can imagine just to keep fit.

I held her gaze, my heart thudding. You’re saying Damon’s involved in something bad?

Her lips pressed together. I’m saying he grew up watching how ruthless his father was. And men like him-she paused, tilting her head, -they don’t just inherit the wealth. They inherit the ways it’s protected.

Damon returned to the table, his phone still in his hand, and his expression was unreadable. Martha pulled back and smiled again, all charm and polish, like the last minute hadn’t happened.

Everything alright?he asked.

Perfect,Martha said brightly, picking up her glass. Your wife was telling me how much she loves family stories.

I smiled faintly, trying to digest what she had just told me.

A crash from nearby dragged our attention.

A couple was sitting at a few tables from us. The woman pushed their table down.

How could you?She snapped.

The man stood up and tried to calm her down but she pushed him away.

Stay the hell away from me, Rex,she said, slapping him hard across the face. You not only got the nanny pregnant you did it in the nursery and in our bedroom?

Gasps filled the hall, mine included.

Martha leaned closer, her eyes shining with mischief. This is always my favourite part of any New York event. Scandals are crazy here.

Rex held the spot she slapped him. That’s because she gives me what I want from you. You don’t satisfy me and we’ve had this conversation with our counselor.

She gasped and hit him again on the other side. How dare you? I’m a bloody perfect wife and I know how to satisfy a man. You’re just not attracted to me and it’s not because of my looks because I know I look good. So just because I won’t peg you with a dildo it doesn’t make me bad in bed!

I placed my hand over my mouth.

Martha burst out laughing, clutching her pearls like it was the best show she’d seen all year.

Oh, bless her heart, she said between chuckles. At least she’s honest.

I was still frozen, my hand halfcovering my mouth as the woman stomped off, her heels clacking furiously against the marble

floor. The man

stood there, redfaced and humiliated, as waiters scrambled to clean the broken glasses.

Rex

Damon sat back down, his jaw tight, and his expression unreadable. He didn’t even smile.

This city never disappoints,” Martha said, fanning herself. And this time, it happened before dessert.

Do they always fight like that?I asked quietly.

Martha sipped her drink. Sweetheart, at events like this, everyone fights like that. They just wait until the cameras are off.

Damon finally looked at me. Ignore them.

I turned to him. I wasn’t the one watching, your grandma was.

He gave Martha a look. You’re a bad influence.

Oh, please, she smirked. She’s a grown woman married to a Gravari. I think she can handle this.

John came back with a water bottle, raining curses on the staff for making him take too long. Martha rolled her eyes and muttered something before taking the bottle from him.

Damon stood. We’re leaving.

He didn’t wait for my reply.

I muttered a polite goodbye to Martha and followed him out of the hall. The noise from inside faded as the doors closed behind us, replaced by the low hum of night and the click of my heels on the floor.

I caught up with him near the exit. You could’ve warned me your grandmother was hilarious.

He looked bored. You handled her better than most people.

Is that supposed to be a compliment?

It’s supposed to mean I don’t really care.

I rolled my eyes. Of course, you do. And she said some things about you too that concern me.

Let me guess, my money is from the devil and you should be careful around me?

He opened the limo door for me before stepping in and shutting it behind him.

Something like that,I answered.
