CHAPTER FIFTY SEVEN
GABRIELLE’S POV
I took the seat at the table and dropped my bag in front of me.
Emily’s eyes followed it. “Wow, look at that Birkin. It’s not even been released yet. I see you’re spending Mr Gravari’s money very well. You wouldn’t even take a penny from Jared. I’m impressed.”
My face heated up.
Yes, I had refused Jared’s money because I had my own. And I had Father’s. I didn’t want to appear too selfish so I always declined.
Thinking back, I wish I had. I wished I had spent every last penny of his before he could attempt to steal my inheritance.
But things were different now.
“I love material things,” I said, keeping my tone calm and neutral. “I always have.”
Her smile widened and she winked at me. “Apparently.”
“And I won’t stop Damon from giving me what he wants to give.” I lifted my chin slightly. “It’s my right. And I’m his wife.”
Emily let out a soft, mocking laugh.
“Wife?” she repeated, as though the word was funny. “Don’t be too delusional now, Gabby. I mean have you seen Damon? He’s way too hot for you. He’s out even richer than Father. You know he’s way out of your league.” (1
I swallowed, feeling my face burn hotter, but I kept my spine straight. I opened my mouth to speak, but she didn’t let me.
“You should enjoy what he gives you,” she said with a careless shrug. “But don’t be stupid enough to think he’ll marry you for
real.”
My breath caught.
“Emily-”
“He’s so handsome though,” she went on, like I hadn’t spoken. “If I were you, I’d ride him like a mechanical bull every time I see him. The man would literally have to get a restraining order on me. Too bad I love Jared.”
She stood up and pulled her chair from the window so she sat across from me.
“Men like him don’t marry girls like you. They use them to entertain themselves. Then they move on to someone from their…. level.”
Her eyes flicked slowly over my clothes, my face, and the bag on the table.
“And trust me,” she added, her voice dropping, “you’re not his level.”
Something in my chest tightened–anger, embarrassment, hurt–I wasn’t sure which one hit first.
“I am his wife,” I said quietly.
Surprise flashed across her face. “Wait. You thean that? He actually married you?”
“He practically forced me to but that’s not the point,” I snapped, then exhaled and let my voice return to its normal tone. “Stop trying to bring me down, Emily. It won’t work anymore.”
She rolled her eyes. “Whatever. Just enjoy your time together before he gets bored. Or until he finds someone prettier. Or until you make one wrong move and he realizes you’re not worth the trouble.”

Her smile turned brittle as her eyes dropped to the ring on my finger.
“You’re living in a fantasy, Gabby. Don’t set yourself up for heartbreak.”
I opened my mouth to speak but the door opened and the nurse walked in. She dropped the water bottle and disposable cups on
the table.
After she walked out, Emily poured herself some. “Your sexy husband is probably terrified that I’d hurt hence the cups. Imagine if that happened.”
I sighed. “I get it. He’s way hotter than I am and he’s out of my league. Are you done or is there more?”
She smirked as she leaned back in her chair. “Here I was thinking you were still madly in love with Jared and hurting. You proved me wrong, Gabby. I just wonder how you could marry him a few weeks after your failed wedding.”
“A few hours after,” I corrected. “Not weeks. And I’m not here to talk about Damon.”
She scoffed. “Then what else are you here for? I presumed you came to brag about the billionaire fish your net caught.”
“I came here to talk to you,” I said, pinching the bridge of my nose. “The things you did to me were terrible. I just wanted to talk things out.
She laughed. “You know the worst part about this place? It’s the fact that Jared can’t be here with me and I miss him so much. My rent at my apartment was already running out. Your generous husband actually helped me by securing this space for me.”
I stared at her in disbelief.
She was bringing up unrelated issues to deflect. It didn’t even seem like we was having a conversation.
“Why are you staring at me like that?” She asked, side eyeing me.
“Emily, I came here to help you,” I said, ignoring her annoying smile. “Talk to me. How can we fix things? I’m ready to apologize for being better than you growing up. Can you apologize for almost killing me?”
She laughed again. “No matter how many drugs they push down my throat I can’t forget our childhood. And I can’t forget the things I did to you.”
Her voice dropped at the end and she reached for my hand. I tried to pull away, but her grip was surprisingly strong.
“I don’t want to forget or fix things,” she said. “Because I’d do them all over again if I could.”
A gasp tore from my throat. I yanked my hands back, disgust curling in my stomach.
“I can’t believe this,” I snapped. “You would’ve been rotting in a cell if I didn’t talk to Damon. I’m trying to get you out, and this is how you act?”
“You’re such a drama queen. And an attention whore.” Her eyes glinted. “Speaking of whore… I guess you must have done it with Damon, right?”
My stomach dropped.
“Emily-”
“Oh, don’t play saint,” she sneered, flicking her hair back. “The only reason a man like Damon Gravari keeps you around is that you spread your legs for him. What else do you have to offer? Your personality?” She snorted. “Please.”
My chest tightened, fury rising despite my efforts to keep it down. “You don’t know anything about my marriage.”
My face turned hot from embarrassment. Emily and I had never had a conversation like this.
She leaned closer, her smile reappearing. “Oh, wait. You haven’t done it yet. What a silly little girl you are.”

My jaw clenched.
“You don’t ever learn,” she folded her arms across her chest. “What did your experience with Jared teach you? If he didn’t want to fuck you and your billionaire hotshot doesn’t either, doesn’t that make you undesirable?”
My stomach twisted.
Emily had succeeded in getting into my head but she had a point. Jared suggested we wait until our wedding night and Damon kept finding excuses to escape.
“Aww,” she cooed mockingly. “You’re just now realizing that? So pathetic and naive. A timid little virgin trophy for the billionaire.”
I couldn’t take it anymore.
I felt the tears building up but I didn’t want to give her the satisfaction of seeing me cry. I rose to my feet and walked to the door.
I heard Emily’s chair scrape the ground as she stood. I turned around fast, before she hit would me from behind.
She noticed me flinching and her smile faded. “Are you scared of me, Gabby?”
I didn’t respond.
Her eyes teared up. “Gabby, I am your sister. Why are you flinching from me?”
