GABRIELLE’S POV
I couldn’t tell if Emily was feigning innocence or if she was really fucked up in the head.
My chest squeezed again. “Why? Have you forgotten you planned to kill me and take my inheritance with your loser boyfriend? And have you forgotten how you almost shot me at the penthouse?”
She took a step forward. “I’m so sorry, Gabby. You made me miserable growing up. Everyone loved you more, including Father. You were the perfect child and I was a mess. So I decided to be different and hate you because no one else would.”
My jaw dropped at her words.
She continued. “In a way, Father and the rest of them are to blame for everything. If they had loved me more I wouldn’t have been jealous of you my entire life.”
I wanted to pull my hair out of frustration.
“Other people are to blame for your actions?” I scoffed. “Enough with the victim mentality, Emily. You’re pure evil. I did nothing but be a good child while you snuck out and stole and brought home bad grades. I did nothing to you.”
Surprise flashed across her face before it twisted into sadness.
“I love you, Gabby,” she said softly, reaching to hold me. “But no matter how much I love you, I just can’t help but hate you more. You’ll always be my only sibling though, I’ll never forget that.”
I stood there, frozen in shock.
Her words tangled around my throat, squeezing until breathing felt like a luxury.
“Gabby…” she whispered again, her fingertips shaking as she reached toward me. “Don’t leave like this.”
I swallowed hard and took a step back until my back hit the door. “How else should I leave? Should I hug you and tell you it’s okay? Should I pretend you didn’t try to ruin my life more times than I can count?”
She rolled her eyes and ran both hands through her hair. “Enough of the whining already. Jesus! I already apologized what more do you want?”
I stared at her, my heart racing. Emily was gone, replaced by this person, this monster, in front of me.
This wasn’t my sister.
Iexhaled, calming myself down “I’m done with you, Emily. You’re never going to change and I’ve accepted that Good bye”
Before I could reach for the door knob I felt something hit the back of my head. Emily had thrown the water bottle at the and its contents splashed all over my backside.
1 gasped and raised my eyes to find her staring at me, wide–eyed and lips parted She tell to her knees and held both hands together.
“Don’t leave me here, Gabby,” she begged, her eyes glistening “Please, I’ll change Fean forgive you if you let me out.”
She could forgive me?
After everything she did to me?
I pulled on the door knob and the nurses rushed in I suddenly realized they were standing by the door and they must have heart
our conversation.
Embarrassment rained over me.

I glanced at Emily one last time.
She was still on her knees and the nurses were holding her back. “Please, sister. Remember all the good times together. Don’t let your evil husband separate us. I love you… I really do.”
My chest tightened painfully. I turned my back to her and walked out of the room while they held her back as she screamed.
As I walked towards the reception where Damon was already waiting for me, my heart broke into a million tiny pieces.
There was a faint irritation on his face that softened the moment his gaze fell on me. He stood up and caught me in his arms before I could fall apart.
The moment his warmth closed around me, the dam finally burst. I buried my face in his chest, my hands clutching at his shirt as silent sobs shook through me.
“Gabrielle, talk to me,” he said. “Did she hurt you?”
I shook my head, unable to speak from the hurt in my heart. The pain of giving up on my sister was old, deep, and carved into my
bones.
Damon tipped my chin up gently, forcing me to meet his eyes. “Talk to me.”
I opened my mouth, but the words were tangled.
All I could whisper was, “You were right. She’s gone, Damon. The sister I knew… she’s really gone.”
He pressed a kiss to my hair. “It’s okay, now. I’ve got you,” he whispered.
I exhaled shakily, my fingers gripping him like an anchor as he led me out of the building, away from the echoes of Emily’s screams and everything she represented.
