Rosetta:
"She's adorable," I said.
I didn't bend down or make a fuss over her, but I gently pinched Elara's cheek before looking back at Elgin.
I noticed he'd brought several bags with him.
From the look of them, I could tell they contained some old belongings.
He explained that they were some of Hailey and Hannah's old things that he'd brought until he could get Elara something new.
"These are old clothes," he murmured.
I'd noticed that he hadn't looked at Elara with affection even once.
Of course, his favorite daughters were Hailey and Hannah.
They were his children, and he'd been part of their lives from the beginning.
"I wanted to ask if you'd come and stay with me to help take care of Elara. Silver refuses to."
At the mention of Silver, he rolled his eyes.
I gave him a small nod, understanding how difficult it was to be with a mate who was such an arrogant piece of shit.
"I can't leave my pack," I replied calmly. "But she can stay here for as long as she wants. I'll take care of her, don't worry."
I reassured him, and it seemed that was exactly what he wanted to hear because he smiled the moment I said it.
"I knew I could count on you," he said with a smile.
His words brought a soft blush to my cheeks.
As always, I was dressed entirely in black.
A black gown, and black lace gloves.
I looked prim and proper, as though there wasn't anything broken inside me.
"I'd originally planned to stay here, but my mother has been blowing up my phone, you know."
He hesitated for a moment before continuing.
"Because of the council leader meeting."
He looked guilty, as though he felt bad for leaving so much responsibility on my shoulders.
"It's okay. I understand."
Once again, my response brought a smile to his lips.
I could already tell that he liked me more than Silver.
And why wouldn't he?
I was better than her in every aspect.
She was cruel, while I wasn't.
She was rough, whereas I was gentle and obedient.
"If you have any problems at all, please let me know. I'll come right away."
He said it while I waved a hand, dismissing his concerns.
"Come on, don't worry. I can take care of a child. I've been taking care of pets my whole life, so go."
I playfully nudged him toward the exit.
He reluctantly glanced back, pouting as though he didn't want to leave.
"Why can't we be together twenty-four seven?" he whispered, though it sounded more like a whimper.
I smiled and motioned for him to go.
We actually hadn't slept together yet because I wanted the marriage to happen first.
