Elgin:
"Are you talking about the same Madeline everyone calls the Savior?" she asked, looking genuinely confused.
"Well, she's not just a savior. She does a lot of fucked-up shit."
I grew impatient, irritated by the way Rosetta spoke so highly of her.
"I don't know," Rosetta replied. "Just because she had babies with you and your friends doesn't make her a whore. I'm just saying that all of you were equally involved. You knew she was with someone else, so why would you–"
She trailed off and shook her head.
"Anyway, just go and calm Elara down. And please be gentle with her. She's only a child."
It was the first time I had seen Rosetta look so disappointed in me.
For a moment, I wondered if I had made a mistake by using those words when talking about Madeline.
"I will be," I replied with a smile, trying to do some damage control.
But the moment I walked into the living room, I hurried toward the room Rosetta had prepared for Elara after letting her sleep in her own bed for a day.
The moment I slammed the door open, my jaw nearly hit the floor.
"What the fuck?" I almost screamed.
The room looked nothing like the ones Hailey and Hannah had.
It was a small, fairy-themed space.
A massive tree stood in the corner, its thick trunk stretching all the way to the ceiling.
Branches spread to the ceiling, covered in green leaves that gave the impression of a real forest growing inside the room.
A wooden ladder rested against the trunk, leading up to a small treehouse tucked among the branches.
My gaze shifted to the bed, and my stomach tightened.
It wasn't an ordinary bed.
It looked like a miniature princess house built right into the room.
A staircase curved up to a second level, where a tiny balcony overlooked the bed below.
Pink flowers decorated the railings, while soft curtains framed the windows of the little house.
The lower section held a large bed covered in pink blankets and pillows.
Everything matched. The walls, the furniture, even the decorations had been chosen to create a dreamy fairy-tale setting.
Storage chests sat beneath the tree, and warm lights glowed from different corners of the room, making the entire place feel cozy and welcoming.
This wasn't a guest room.
This wasn't a temporary arrangement.
Someone had put time, effort, and a ridiculous amount of money into making this place perfect for a little girl.
And judging by the look of it, Rosetta had done everything she could to make Elara feel at home.
And then there was that little piece of shit, sitting on the pink carpet and crying her eyes out.
The moment she realized I was there, she jumped to her feet and ran toward me.
"Daddy, take me to Mommy!" she cried, reaching out to wrap her tiny arms around me.
