Silver:
Everything was perfect.
Everyone had treated us so well, and now it was finally our turn.
Elgin had changed into his costume.
We were dressed as old people, whereas our daughters were dressed as mature adults.
One was dressed as a lawyer, and the other as a doctor.
Now we were on stage, and the performance was going great.
Everybody was cheering so loudly for us.
I noticed the eyes on us. People seemed so intimidated by us.
Hailey, dressed as a doctor, stepped forward while Elgin and I sat on a chair, holding hands.
Our hair had been dyed white with temporary dye to make us look old.
Hailey looked at us with a frown.
"You don't care for me as much as you care for Hannah," she complained, looking adorable while trying to deliver a mature speech.
"That is not true," I replied, delivering my line.
Everybody cheered once again.
It was as if everyone wanted to stay in my good books because they knew I was the person closest to Elgin.
If they ever needed a favour from him, I would probably be the one who could convince him.
"That is the truth. You have always picked Hannah over me," Hailey complained, dramatically covering her face with her hands.
"That is why I have decided something."
Then she lowered her hands and pointed at us.
"You two are old now," she declared.
Elgin gasped dramatically.
He was probably happy because, after this, he was going to be showered with so many fucking packs.
There were now two council leaders living in our house.
They were basically telling us everything that was happening behind the scenes and what the council members were deciding.
"I cannot take care of you two," Hailey continued, placing her hands on her waist.
She tried to look mature and angry, but every now and then, a laugh threatened to slip out.
I was worried they might have figured something out.
Elgin had brought them so many gifts, and since morning, they had been pestering the guards about whatever was hidden in the backyard.
"What are you saying? Your parents have done so much for you," Elgin delivered his line dramatically, pressing a hand to his chest.
"No, you're not a good father. You loved one child more than the other," Hailey continued.
I turned to look at Elgin sadly, still staying in character.
That was when I noticed him zoning out for a moment.
