Elgin:
Everything had been going so well. We were performing well, too.
There were a few moments when I lost focus, especially when I looked into Hailey's eyes while she delivered her lines.
The pain in her voice unsettled me. I would never treat her differently from Hannah.
Then, for the briefest moment, I thought about Elara.
I immediately pushed the thought away.
I didn't need to feel guilty for her.
Her mother had wronged me, and Elara had chosen Baxter as her father.
But then something else happened.
Everyone's eyes were fixed on the papers, scanning them carefully.
“What is going on? It must be a misprint. The reports are fake anyway,” I grunted, snatching the papers and rolling my eyes.
However, the teacher with the glasses, the one who had planned this skit, suddenly walked onto the stage, rubbing her hands anxiously.
“Everybody listen to her. She's going to tell you it was a fake report and the script got messed up," Silver spoke up first.
The crowd immediately burst into laughter.
"Well, then Hailey was right to question her parents," someone called out from the crowd.
It was Silver's father. He was joking around.
We all laughed, but I noticed that the teacher looked devastated.
"It's okay. It's all right," Silver told her. "You don't have to apologize."
The teacher shook her head and took the microphone.
Turning toward the audience, she spoke.
"Actually, we asked everyone for blood samples a few weeks ago."
Her words made everyone frown.
Was she about to talk about some charity project?
"One of the reasons we did that was to conduct DNA tests."
The statement came completely out of nowhere.
As she continued speaking, an uneasy feeling settled in my stomach.
"Wait, you can't just take blood and run DNA tests without permission!" my mother shouted from the crowd.
As one of the council leaders, she immediately took charge of the situation.
Still, I remained confused.
I had a bad feeling about this.
"Yes, but everyone signed the consent forms," the teacher explained. "The children took those papers home for you to sign."
Suddenly, I remembered.
Over the past few weeks, I had been so busy that I hadn't bothered reading most of the papers my children handed me for signatures.
I had assumed they were related to a parent meeting, school results, or preparations for the event.
"Well, whatever. It's fine if it's a misprint," I said, dismissing the issue. "It's not a big deal."
The teacher looked at me.
"Actually, it's not a misprint."
The words hit me like the ground had disappeared beneath my feet.
"What do you mean?" I snapped at the teacher.
