Daniel:
Livia and I silently watched the child.
She looked like she was about to cry, but not from sadness.
This was the first time we'd seen her smile so brightly.
She was happy.
"What did you say?" I asked excitedly.
Out of the corner of my eye, I kept glancing at Livia because, sadly, she didn't share the same excitement.
Usually, she cared deeply about her patients and always thought about what was best for them.
So this was the first time I had seen her look so upset, as though she couldn't breathe.
This was a huge breakthrough.
Not only had this innocent girl started speaking again, but she had also recognized her father.
On top of that, the stranger who had been asking about his family now had his daughter.
Gina remembered everything.
She wasn't speaking much yet, but she remembered everything.
With this, we could easily find out the stranger's identity, his family, his name, everything.
So why was it that instead of Livia, I seemed to be the more excited one?
"This is my daddy," the little girl said, smiling widely.
Tears formed in her eyes and rolled down her cheeks. Tears of happiness.
"You're not feeling well right now. How about you rest a little, and then we'll talk about it again? What do you say?"
As expected, Livia tried to change the subject.
I'd noticed it before too. She was becoming too involved in taking care of the stranger.
I didn't know what I was feeling.
Probably jealousy.
"Oh my God," little Gina whispered as she kissed the picture and began to cry. "I've missed Daddy so much."
Until now, we hadn't introduced the child to anyone else. Since arriving here and regaining consciousness, she had only seen me, a nurse, and Livia. No one else even knew she was here.
Yet it felt like my attention kept drifting away from Gina and back to Livia.
"When can I meet my daddy?" Gina asked through tears. Tears of pure happiness.
"This is your daddy?" Livia finally asked, but there was a shake in her voice, as if she were shaking.
"Yes, this is my daddy," little Gina confirmed, smiling at her.
Livia stared at her for a few seconds before straightening her back.
I could tell she knew I was watching her, so she had to choose her next words carefully.
Sadly, she disappointed me.
