Even I was aware that my confidence in the monster listening to me might have been misplaced.

There was a high possibility that we would go there and it would attack us.

Maybe it didn’t only attack me.

Maybe it had only been protective because of Ron, or perhaps for Byron's sake.

There were thousands of possibilities.

In this situation, I was heading toward the monster with an entire troop behind me.

If the monster hurt me, not only would I lose my credibility, but I would also feel guilty.

These people had come to fight for me and save me.

We kept moving until we reached the mountain top.

That's when Nala's grip tightened around my arm.

I gestured for her to stay where she was because the moment I heard the sound of wings flapping, I felt overwhelmed.

I started walking toward the oak tree where I knew the monster was.

It had probably sensed an unfamiliar presence.

Its wings were already beating against the air.

"You don't need to be hostile," I said as I looked up at the monster.

It seemed ready to attack. Its eyes were glowing.

Then it stretched its beak forward as if it were trying to get a better look at me.

The next thing I knew, it flapped its wings and landed on the ground in front of me.

Honestly, even my heart skipped a beat.

I stepped back, my left hand wrapped around my right shoulder, gently touching the silver embedded inside.

The monster stared at me.

Then it started walking toward me.

I noticed Nala moving with her men, preparing to attack the monster.

I discreetly gestured for her to stop.

She relaxed for a moment.

This time, I didn't step away from the monster either.

Slowly and carefully, it touched its beak to the silver lodged in my shoulder.

I closed my eyes and tilted my neck to the side.

The next thing I knew, its tongue brushed against my skin.

Then its beak pierced my shoulder, just enough to get a firm grip on the silver.

"Ah!" I screamed in pain, noticing the way the monster flinched as well.

It wasn't trying to attack me or hurt me.

It was being extremely careful, as though it wanted to treat me gently.

This time, it seemed as though even Nala and the others understood.

The monster wasn't trying to hurt me. Its intentions were completely different. It was trying to help me.

And I felt it.

I felt it trying to save me.

As it applied more pressure and I screamed my head off, I heard the cabin door burst open.

"What are you doing? Get away from her!" Ron screamed.

"No, wait!" Nala shouted back, rushing over to stop him.

There were people everywhere.

"Where am I? Who are all these people?" I asked.

"They're my people, silly," Nala reminded me and I nodded.

"Why does it hurt so much?" I asked, gently touching my shoulder.

That's when I noticed the fresh herbs wrapped around it.

I instantly became more alert.

"Oh, wait," I gasped.

"The monster?"

I frowned, trying to remember what had happened.

"You were attacked by pack members, and we brought you back to the cabin to hide. Then the monster–" She paused, making my eyes go wide.

I tried to sit up, but pain shot through my shoulder.

Nala quickly helped me settle back onto the couch.

"The monster took the silver out of your shoulder. But the way it wrapped its arms around you when you were falling–" She let out a small laugh. "It looked like you were its child."

The smile vanished from her face.

"I'm sorry. That wasn't something I should joke about."

Then she took a deep breath.

"You know, that arrow was coated with a poison that would kill you no matter how strong you are. It had entered your blood, and would spread through your body for fifteen days, eventually killing you."

She stared at me expectantly.

I stared back with very little reaction.

So I was going to die soon?
