"Mother," I asked in a soft voice, "I am afraid to ask you but—did they hurt you?"

She looked at me and slowly shook her head.

"No. Your father protected me before they took him away. I had passed out during everything that happened, but he made sure I was safe before they came back for him.

"By the time I woke up, I found out what they had done to him."

My mother rubbed both hands over her face, trying to wipe away her tears.

"What happened then?" I asked.

For a brief moment, she fell silent. Then a small smile appeared on her lips.

"Then I got pregnant."

She gently touched my cheek, and I smiled back.

"Was it me?" I asked, pointing at my chest and she nodded.

"You and your two sisters."

The moment she said that, my smile vanished.

"What?" I asked, my voice turning flat.

"It was a triplet pregnancy."
