"Father,” I uttered in tears.

I was panicking ever since I got to the hotel.

Elgin turned out to be a true bastard.

He simply kicked me out and humiliated me in front of everyone, in front of that loser, good-for-nothing woman, Kaylee.

And it all happened because of me. Because I gave him so much power. I made him feel wanted even when he wasn't.

"What is it?" my father asked.

We were sitting across from each other in the coffee chairs, staring out the window at the empty road.

My daughters had cried themselves to sleep, and I didn't even know how to comfort them.

"If only I had been honest," I began, rubbing my hands together. "If only I had been a good person. If I had, I would have seen right through Elgin when he mistreated Madeline because of me."

I paused and gulped, realizing the kind of pain I had wanted for Madeline for no fucking reason over a man who could never belong to anyone.

"This is to show you something, my daughter. This is a great lesson. Sometimes what we want is not what we deserve. You deserved better, but when you did all that to a poor, helpless woman, you became just like Elgin," my father said.

I nodded because I agreed with him. Everything we did to Madeline was so unnecessary.

That woman was dealing with one pain after another, and everyone contributed to it.

Sometimes I felt as if the Moon Goddess was specifically punishing those who had hurt Madeline.

I knew my father was hurting deep down too.

He had been waiting for a higher position for a long time.

When he finally got it, his daughter ruined it for him. I was pretty sure people would laugh at him, whether to his face or behind his back.

And whose fault was that? No one's but mine.

"I do have something I can do to make myself look better," I said to my father, trying to find the right words, but there were none. I had fallen from grace in the worst possible way.

"I mean, I can promise her a safe place as long as she gives me her tears."

"Well then, we can utilize those bottles for now," my father said excitedly.

"This could be presented to everyone," my father said, and I realized I no longer needed any help. I no longer needed to convince the council leaders. My father was a council leader himself, so he could approve me without any DNA testing. After all, I had already told him that I had the magical years that would work.

"Not yet," I said, my fists clenching. "Mathew told me that Elgin is planning a public humiliation for me. He'll throw the divorce papers in my face as he tells the world what a scum of a woman I am."

I paused when I saw my father's eyes widen. His displeasure was becoming visible.

"But don't worry, Father. This event won't be a humiliation. It will be a rise for me, like a phoenix," I said, pointing at my chest. "Because at this event, I will tell everyone that I can heal little children with my tears. And you know how desperate the parents have become. They'll happily take my side then."

I remembered how they had once praised and cherished Madeline.

My father stared at me in silence before a smile spread across his face. The next thing I knew, we were sharing drinks.

I no longer cared who Elgin married. I would ruin him and his new wife too.
