Ron:
Saying I was furious would be an understatement. I was beyond that.
My mind was racing with countless thoughts.
I could have gone against my own rule and attacked Graham, but I don't know.
Something told me to wait. I should give her one more chance to come and explain everything to me.
I waited, and eventually she walked back out.
Our eyes met, and I expected her to ask me to step aside so she could speak with me.
Instead, she tried to walk past me.
I quickly stepped in front of her, blocking her path.
"You have some explaining to do," I told her, watching her close her eyes and take a deep breath.
And just as I had expected, she gestured for me to move aside.
We walked over to the kitchen, and I turned to face her. I could not stand still.
I kept pacing, anxiously running a hand through my hair, gasping, and clenching my fists.
Finally, she faced me with her arms folded across her chest.
"It's part of the revenge," she said.
Although I wanted to feel relieved so badly, I still wasn't sure how this was supposed to be part of the revenge.
"You marrying him isn't revenge. It'll be sweet, sweet treat for him," I said, reminding her how badly he and Elgin had been obsessed with her.
"I would like to know more than just that," I insisted when she gave me a blunt look.
"What I'm trying to say is, there's a big event tomorrow, and I've been preparing for it," she explained, making me frown in confusion.
"Are you talking about—?" I asked, and she nodded.
I already knew what event she was referring to. Mathew had talked about it earlier today. It was Silver's public humiliation and divorce.
"What does he have to do with it?" I asked, watching her take a deep breath.
"You'll need to be very open-minded when I tell you all this," she replied before explaining everything to me.
I let her hold it, but only because I respected her enough not to shrug her off.
"No, Madeline. If you trusted me, you would have told me everything. But you kept it from me."
I paused as she swallowed hard.
"I was afraid you would stop me. I told you," she insisted.
"Yeah, because it's a dangerous game you're playing. But do you really think any of this will matter to the council? If anything, they'll punish Graham and Silver, but they'll never punish Kaylee for it. Because now Kaylee is with Elgin, and his mother is a fucking council leader," I yelled, trying to make her understand.
All this planning for what? There was no justice anymore in this world.
"I'm not doing it to get justice from the council, Ron. I'm doing it so that I'm the one who finally delivers justice. I'll be the judge tomorrow," Madeline said, her eyes sparkling with tears.
"And I understand I've upset you, but I didn't want to drag you into it. I knew you wouldn't have been able to show genuine emotions in front of Graham. And I didn't want to fuck it up," she mumbled before taking a deep breath and reaching over to place her hand on my shoulder.
"Trust me. I'm doing this for you, Ron, and for every victim of theirs," I heard her voice crack.
As she began to walk away, I caught her hand and pulled her back into my embrace.
The way she broke down, it seemed like she had been waiting to be in someone's arms to cry.
