Ron:
Ever since I learned the monster's story, I had been anxious.
I felt like I knew exactly what I had to do, as if the solution to this whole mess was right in front of me.
I just had to find Lady Eugenia.
After that, we watched the fence being built.
Nala's warriors were working efficiently.
Once in a while, they would stop beside the tree and stare at the monster, wondering why he wasn't attacking them.
He just stayed there.
He would occasionally leave, and every time he did, everyone would panic, thinking he was finally going to attack.
Instead, he would come back with an animal in his claw, as if it were simply lunchtime.
After that, around dinnertime, Nala's warriors informed me that they had spotted Madeline on the trail, which meant she was almost here.
I was excited to tell her what I had learned about the monster.
Lately, she had been so busy that she barely wanted to talk about it or even pay attention to it.
I could tell why.
There was a hidden anger in her eyes whenever she looked at the monster.
The only reason she was keeping it alive was because it was helping us stay here without people attacking us.
Every now and then, a group of warriors would appear, hoping to attack and drag Madeline away.
The moment they saw the monster, they would turn back and flee in fear.
I waited for her by the living room door.
The warriors had already set up their tents outside.
Nala was staying in the upstairs room, while I remained in the living room, even though Madeline no longer wanted to stay in the room she and Baxter had once shared.
As soon as the door opened, I smiled to welcome Madeline.
My smile vanished the moment I realized she wasn't alone.
The person beside her made my fists clench.
"Graham," I spat before charging at him.
Madeline reacted instantly, planting a hand against my chest and shoving me back so hard I nearly crashed into the couch behind me.
I lunged at him again, but this time she stepped between us.
"What is he doing here?" I screamed at Madeline. "Why haven't you killed him yet?" I added, pointing at him.
Graham remained expressionless.
He looked like he had lost a lot of weight, but that was it.
Why the fuck was he with Madeline?
Why was she protecting him?
"Calm down," Madeline murmured.
The softness in her voice gave me a terrible feeling.
She had forgiven him.
