Graham:
Her tone, however, didn't match her actions. She sounded much calmer as she asked me that question.
I simply lifted my head and sniffled.
"I do," I promised, watching her slowly lift her foot off my back.
She watched me in silence before stepping back, almost as if giving me permission to get back on my feet.
So I did.
I slowly found my footing and faced her again.
There was no way I could fight her now, and she knew that too.
That's why she was so confident.
"What do you want?" she asked, perhaps trying to understand why I had attacked her.
"I didn't mean to hurt you. I just wanted to remind you how much I love you," I began to explain, choosing my words carefully.
She nodded, almost as if trying to understand what I was saying.
Then she folded her arms across her chest.
"I have been lonely too," she admitted.
My heart flipped in my chest.
She hadn't talked to me about her feelings in a very long time.
And, I mean, if I had to guess, it was because of my own actions.
"I know," I said, trying to reach for her, but she held up her palm, so I stepped back again.
"I've been stripped of my husband's love. My children have been stolen from me. I live alone in a cabin where I have to face the monster."
She paused, and I noticed a slight crack in her voice. I didn't know the full story about the monster.
"I'll go and fight the monster for you," I offered.
She rolled her neck before scoffing and shaking her head, as if calling me an idiot, while slowly slipping her hands into the pockets of her black pants.
"There won't be any need," she hissed, "because the monster fucking wants to play games."
She spoke with raw emotion.
"He's trying to protect me after killing my daughter."
She paused as she hugged herself.
I watched real tears spill from her eyes.
"I will. I will do it for you."
The moment I said that, I watched Madeline raise her head and stare at me in shock.
"What?" she asked.
Tears still streamed down her face, but now there was unmistakable shock in her expression.
"I said I will do it for you. I'll bring Elara back from Elgin. I'll find Bodhi, and I'll punish everyone who has wronged you," I said confidently, watching her continue to stare at me in disbelief. It was exactly the reaction I had hoped for.
"You will?" she asked, and I nodded.
"I–I don't know what to say," she mumbled with a faint smile, looking genuinely grateful.
"But you can't go outside right now. Not until I say so," she uttered, making me frown as she approached me.
Then, without warning, she raised her hand and pressed something against my neck.
It was wolfsbane.
"But I said I'll help you," I protested, already beginning to feel dizzy.
"And that is why I'm doing this. Because I'm not going to lose you like I lost everyone else."
The way she gently cupped my cheek, I had no problem letting myself fall asleep as the wolfsbane took effect.
