After hearing everything Madeline had to say, I realized none of it was her fault.

She was only trying to do what she believed was necessary to get her revenge and her children back.

"What are you trying to say?" I asked my wolf.

‘I'm just saying the monster definitely isn't as mindless as we think. It knows things. Otherwise, why the heck would it be so lenient toward Madeline? And how the heck does it know not to attack the people connected to her? How does it even figure out who's here to attack her and who's here to protect her?’

My wolf was making so much sense that I felt like the idiot.

My eyes shifted to the monster, and I stared at it.

It was sleeping with its beak tucked beneath its feathers, its neck twisted all the way back.

"But why do you think it's so lenient toward Madeline? I mean, it attacked her in the past," I said, trying to get my wolf's opinion.

‘I'm not sure, but I know something changed in it,’ my wolf replied. ‘Otherwise, after seeing Graham with her today, it would have immediately known Graham was someone Madeline hated. Yet it didn't attack him.’

The monster is far more understanding than we are, which is why Madeline seems to be so upset with it.

‘It can differentiate between right and wrong,’ my wolf finished.

I continued staring at the monster, watching it ruffle its feathers every once in a while.

I honestly felt bad for it.
