"Come on, let me speak with her," I insisted to Mathew, watching a plethora of emotions cross his face.

I could tell he was exhausted.

He had even agreed to go along with Ron's plan.

Now he was caught between doing the right thing and doing something completely reckless.

From the look on his face, I knew he wasn't proud of himself.

"Come on, Mathew, please," I pleaded.

"What if something happened to Byron? Madeline is going to—"

Before I could finish, he pulled up a stool, sat in front of me, and held out the phone with the speaker turned on.

He warned me with a look not to say anything, or he would end the call immediately.

"Nala, where have you been?" Rosetta asked from the other side.

There was urgency in her voice.

"I was here," I replied softly.

"Is Byron okay?" I asked at once.

"Yeah, yeah, he's fine," she answered.

The moment Mathew heard that, I watched his thumb move toward the end-call button.

"Wait. Was there anything you wanted to talk about?" I asked quickly, hoping Mathew wouldn't end the call so soon.

"Yeah. I was going to ask when Madeline will start covering the area. Tell her not to come immediately. Wait for the crowd to arrive. Only then should she come and hide among the trees in the woods."

She spoke carefully, hinting that the open ground needed to fill first.

Then Madeline and her friends could approach from behind, climb the trees, and watch the whole show from there.

"Anything else?" I asked immediately.

By this point, Mathew was glaring at me, as if silently telling me he knew exactly what I was trying to do.

"No. Is there anything else we need to talk about?" Rosetta asked.

She could already tell something was wrong.

"The monster," I said quickly, watching Mathew frown at me

. His expression silently warned me to shut the fuck up.

"What about it?" she asked.

"Nothing much. We were just thinking about killing it next. You know, Madeline has to avenge her daughter and her husband's deaths."

I spoke carefully, hearing my heart thump in my chest.

The reason I brought it up was because she had initially told me not to kill the monster.

Then, when she mentioned it again, her eyes were filled with emotion.
