Baxter and I were sitting together, making a plan, when my phone buzzed and Livia's number appeared on the screen.

"It's Livia," I told Baxter.

We immediately pushed the papers aside and moved closer together on the couch, our eyes fixed on the phone.

I gave him a nod before putting the call on speaker.

"Livia, where the fuck have you been?" I demanded, immediately voicing my concern.

She responded rather strangely from the other end.

Her voice was unusually calm.

"I was busy with work, but now I'm back, and I'm fine. But—I miss you."

I was caught off guard when she spoke in a seductive tone.

I looked at Baxter, who raised an eyebrow at me because, well, I hadn't told him that there was something going on between us.

"Um—you did?" I asked in confusion.

Baxter shook his head and reached for the phone to speak to her, but before he could say anything, she spoke up again.

"I was ummm thinking maybe we could just spend the night together. I was really lonely," she said, another seductive moan slipping from her lips.

Baxter immediately pulled his hand back and looked at me questioningly.

Then he leaned forward to speak, but she cut him off again.

"And while you're coming over, please bring enough food for seven or eight people. The guards seem to be starving."

There was a slight sigh in her voice, as though she were exhausted.

By then, both Baxter and I were on high alert.

"And don't bring condoms. Um— if I need any, I'll ask these guards to get it for me."

I felt heat rush to my ears.

I had no clue what she was doing.

Had she called the wrong person?

Did she have someone who came over to please her?

A thousand thoughts raced through my mind when I felt Baxter's grip tighten around my wrist.

I looked over at him, and he gave me a subtle nod.

"Um— okay. I'll— I'm actually on my way," I replied eagerly.

She ended the call without another word.

"It's Sawyer’s guards. They're with her," Baxter said immediately.

I slapped my forehead.

"Why? Did you really think she was calling you for sex?"

Being Baxter, he asked it in an icy tone that made my throat go dry.

"No, but I was definitely confused," I admitted, feeling thoroughly unsettled.

I'd loved Livia for a very long time, so hearing her say all that felt different.
