Baxter:
I had been worried about Daniel ever since he left.
The thing about him was that he was an incredibly honest guy.
I didn't know if I'd ever met someone like him before, but deep down, I knew I hadn't.
Even my wolf liked him.
He was genuinely kind, the kind of person you came across once in a lifetime.
So when I finally heard the hatch opening, I jumped to my feet and hurried to the ladder to watch him climb down.
The moment he reached the bottom, he handed me a piece of paper before rushing into the bathroom.
I frowned and looked at it.
It listed iron, water, and a few other random items.
"What's going on?" I asked, watching him bend over the sink and splash water across his face.
"Oh, this is the stuff we can use just in case the lycan, you know, gets out of control."
A quiet sniffle escaped him as he spoke, immediately catching my attention.
"Is everything okay?" I asked.
"Is Livia okay?"
I slipped the piece of paper into my pocket.
"Yeah. I mean, Sawyer took her mother from her, so—there's that," he replied quietly.
But his eyes were red, as though he'd cried all the way here.
"Have you been crying?" I asked, leaning against the doorframe with one hand resting above my head.
"No," he answered, his voice almost hysterical.
"By the way, I really admire how strong you are."
The compliment seemed to slip out before he even thought about it.
I folded my arms across my chest and stepped aside as he walked out of the bathroom, immediately looking around for something to keep himself busy.
"Tell me what happened over there," I pressed.
He turned around and smiled at me.
"Even when you insist, your voice sounds like thunder, you know."
I heard the crack in his voice, and everything clicked.
"Did she—reject you?" I asked.
He immediately shook his head.
"No. I never confessed my feelings to her, and I'm so glad I didn't. I'm not her type, you know."
His body language was so shaky that it hurt to watch.
I hated seeing him in so much pain while he still forced himself to smile.
"Dude, what is going on?" I demanded, my voice much firmer this time.
Then he started telling me how they'd had to pretend they were having sex and everything.
"That's it?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Well, she said she's going to give him the trigger."
He was still speaking when I pointed a finger at him and shook it.
