Baxter:
With every step I took, I felt my heartbeat quicken.
Every little thing started hitting me all at once.
How was it possible that I had cheated on Madeline?
I mean, okay, if someone was being abused, of course I would have helped her.
But how could I have gotten romantically involved with her and betrayed Madeline like that?
And then there was what my wolf had said about Madeline keeping that woman locked up because she was jealous of her, or because Kaylee had tried to take me away from her.
That didn’t feel right to me.
Although Madeline had told Nina that she would kill her, that had come from pure love, not vengeance or hatred.
Madeline wasn’t like that.
As I thought about all of it, my wolf scoffed inside my head.
“And how would you know what she’s like? You don’t have your memories.”
The minute he said that, I clenched my jaw so hard that I heard my teeth grind against each other.
Then I stepped onto the last stair and saw her.
The woman sat in the corner, hugging her knees with her head lowered and her face buried between her arms.
“What? Have you come downstairs to see how much pain I’m in after you gave me wolfsbane?” the woman spoke up.
And that was the thing.
When I had first seen Madeline in the human world after waking up from the coma, my heart had started racing, goosebumps had risen all over my skin, and something inside me had come alive.
When I heard her voice, I had nearly lost my mind.
But now, standing in front of this woman, I felt nothing.
If anything, I felt some bottled-up rage.
“You were the one who said you’d give me mental abuse, right?” she said, her voice breaking. “Fine, go ahead. I deserve it. After all, your husband and I—”
She stopped talking, and my heart skipped a beat.
“I know you must have been furious when you found out that I ran away with your husband. But I lost a lot too. My life was destroyed after that one decision. My children— my children died. I can never become a mother again.”
As she said all of that, I suddenly realized that her story was matching what my wolf had told me.
Then she suddenly lifted her head, still crying, and the moment her eyes landed on me, I watched them widen.
I didn’t know what I was feeling, but when she said that she had run away with me, something felt very wrong.
I had run away with her, then her children had died, and so much had happened to her.
And after all of that, I had left her and gone back to my wife to try to win her heart again.
Had I really done all of that?
