I didn't know what had happened, but Madeline had suddenly started questioning me about all sorts of things, more specifically about the monster.

I should have known that, unlike Baxter or anybody else, Madeline would have a different approach to everything.

I'd heard about her before, about how she always, always sorted things out.

But she could multitask, which was why, even while dealing with Kaylee, looking for her child, fixing her home, her marriage, and her relationships, and taking care of the daughter she'd thought was dead, she somehow found the time to question me about the monster.

And I dipped.

I hated how I'd run from there. Because what was the point? Even if I ran away today, I'd have to face her tomorrow.

I couldn't just leave my werewolf home behind. She was a president's wife, and now was working with her husband in business too.

Of course, where would I go?

I didn't know. Maybe I just wanted to buy myself some time.

By the time I left for home, I'd already called my mother to tell her I was coming.

"What is going on? Why do you sound so anxious?" my mother asked.

Now my mother was back home, once again getting an anxious call from her daughter. I could only imagine how she was feeling.

"That new president's wife," I said, taking deep, heavy breaths.

"Oh, Madeline? Isn't she the old president's wife as well?" my mother questioned.

I nodded as if she could see me through the phone.

The cab driver was practically racing because I'd told him to.

"She was asking me all sorts of questions."

I paused and glanced at the cab driver from the back seat.

I didn't want to say anything he could overhear because I knew he had his ears on my conversation.

"About what?" my mother questioned.

I gulped and sniffled anxiously.
