Baxter:
But it seemed like my wife was having a picnic of her own.
She was finding out about her family, and it just made me want to ask her more questions.
I wanted to be more included. I wanted to know everything.
If my wolf was blocking my memories, then I wanted to tell him that I would still find out everything about my mate.
I wouldn’t let my wolf think that he was the only one who knew about my mate and could control our lives.
And to be honest, finding out that she was family with Livia shouldn’t have been so hard for us. The signs were there.
“Kaylee was the woman married to your best friend.” Madeline stared at the ground as we stood next to the window, my hands in my pants pockets and hers folded across her chest.
“Was I—.” I paused, taking a deep breath. “Was I in love with her? Did I cheat on you with her? Did I run away with her?” I questioned.
“Is that what your wolf told you?” Madeline asked, already seeming to find the truth a little too hard to swallow.
“Well, he said other stuff,” I said, tilting my head to look at Madeline.
The sunlight was coming straight through the window, and sometimes the clouds would cover the sun.
In those moments, she looked like a goddess.
And it already made sense that my wolf had lied. Why would I cheat on Madeline with a woman who was in the basement?
“Like what?” she asked, demanding an answer.
“Like the fact that you’re keeping her there out of jealousy because I ran away with her, blah blah. But this is what Kaylee said too when she first saw me. When I first walked downstairs, she thought I was you. So she started saying that she understood your anger because she ran away with me. What is that about? She lost her children, her ability to become a mother. Was it all because of me?” I questioned, watching Madeline take a deep breath and then unfold her arms from across her chest.
She looked down for a moment, and then she looked up again. This time, there were big, heavy tears in her eyes.
“You did not run away with her,” she corrected me. “She ran away with you.”
I was lost.
I kept watching her face, and she understood. I was trying to ask her what the difference was.
“You were in a coma when she took your body out of the hospital and left you to die on the mountain top.”
The truth about my past with Kaylee stunned me for a moment.
