Baxter:
Seeing my parents standing in front of me made every hair on my body rise, but at the same time, it gave me a little hope.
“Look at my son. He’s completely fine now,” my mother said, touching my chin.
Then, almost immediately, she added, “But Baxter, don’t forget. Your sister died because of you.”
That was it.
We were seeing each other after so long, and after noticing that I was finally better, the second thing she chose to do was remind me that my sister had died because of me.
“Eugenia, stop it,” my father snapped before giving me a smile. “Come on, young man. What are you doing out here?”
Then his eyes moved behind me before settling on the bag in my hand.
“Oh no. Were you trying to run away?”
My mother’s voice instantly turned harsh.
“Eugenia, give me a second. Let me talk to him,” my father tried to intervene.
She shoved a palm toward his face.
“You stay out of it.”
Then she looked back at me more carefully.
“Baxter, I’m so disappointed in you. Where exactly were you planning to go? Were you not even going to wait for us? After taking my daughter away from me, were you planning to take my son away too? Where were you going?”
She started screaming, making me more anxious by the second.
My eyes kept darting toward the back of the hospital.
“I was running back to you.”
The second I said it, she went silent.
She placed a hand against her chest and studied me more closely.
“Look, we came here to take you home. Your father will finish all the paperwork, and then we’ll go.”
She reached for my hand.
I immediately pulled away.
Both of them stared at me.
“I have a friend here too. He has a wolf as well. Can we take him with us?” I pleaded.
My mother looked horrified.
She glanced at my father, then back at me.
“We can’t do that. We can’t just take another child out of here.”
“Then I’m not going,” I cried. “I’ll stay here. Let them completely destroy my wolf too.”
“What are you saying?”
My mother grabbed both of my hands and quickly looked around to make sure nobody was listening.
“I mean it. I don’t want my wolf if I have to leave my friend behind. I promised him I wouldn’t abandon him, so I have to stay.”
She immediately started shaking her head.
“Do you see this?” she grumbled to my father. “He’s lost his mind. Wherever he goes, he gets himself into some kind of trouble.”
“Leave him alone.” My father looked at me. “Baxter, tell me your friend’s name. We’ll go inside and get him, all right?”
I stared at him with sudden hope.
“Really? You’ll bring him with us?”
My father nodded.
“Have you lost your mind?” my mother snapped. “I’m not taking some random child home with us.”
“His name is Sawyer. He’s the president’s son, but he has a wolf too. We can take him with us,” I explained excitedly.
At the mention of the president, my father turned toward my mother.
“That doesn’t matter,” I continued quickly. “His wolf is still alive, and they’re trying to destroy it. That’s horrible.”
I grabbed my mother’s hand.
She looked at my father, then back at me.
Finally, she sighed.
“Fine. We’ll get him.”
My entire body relaxed.
“You know what, babe?” she said to my father. “You two go sit in the car, okay?”
Then she turned to me.
“Drink your juice and eat your sandwich. Once you’ve finished, I’ll bring your friend out.”
My mother had taken control of the entire situation, and I knew that once she made a decision, even my father rarely argued with her.
“Come on, Baxter.”
My father took my hand.
“Baxter, finish your food,” my mother warned. “Otherwise, we won’t be able to bring Sawyer with us.”
I was chained to it.
“What the hell is going on? Why am I tied up?” I cried, raising my voice.
Finally, the door opened, and my mother walked in.
She looked at me and smiled.
“I’m so glad you’re awake,” she said with a strange, fake grin.
There was a syringe in her hand.
“What are you doing? Mom, you promised me you would bring Sawyer. Where is he?”
I started crying as I watched her fill the syringe with something.
“Some president’s son?” she snapped. “Have you lost your mind? You expected me to kidnap a president’s child and bring him here?”
My heart skipped a beat.
“What do you mean? You lied to me? You left Sawyer there?”
Panic rushed through me.
“What day is it? Tell me. Hurry!”
I started struggling against the chains as she pushed the needle into my arm.
“What are you giving me?” I screamed.
“A little something to help you forget your little stay in the human world.”
I stared at her.
“I brought the medicine back from there. It’s important that you forget, Baxter. And it’s better if everyone else forgets too. Nobody here can find out that you spent all that time in the human world. If they do, your reputation will be ruined.”
Her voice started fading before she even finished speaking.
Then everything went black again.
When I woke up later, I couldn’t understand why I felt so upset.
The memories were gone.
But the feeling wasn’t.
There was still this strange agitation buried somewhere inside my chest, a hollow ache I couldn’t explain.
It felt like something was missing from my life.
Like I had done something terrible without even knowing it.
