Accidentally Pregnant By My Alpha Best friends (Madeline) novel Chapter 895

Sawyer:

I made it to the service door and stopped beside it, anxiously waiting for my friend.

He should have been there by now.

I rubbed my hands together, trying to keep myself calm as I stared through the narrow glass panel.

Outside, the path beside the building was empty.

Baxter still hadn’t arrived.

I shifted my weight from one foot to the other.

Maybe he was taking the longer way around.

Or maybe somebody had seen him, forcing him to hide until they left so he could come back out again.

For the first few minutes, I kept giving myself explanations.

Then half an hour passed, and my stomach tightened.

He was taking way too long.

It wasn’t even that far.

And even if someone had been outside, they should have left by now. Baxter should have made it here already.

Then I heard footsteps.

My breath caught in my throat.

Someone was coming down the corridor.

I stepped away from the door and looked around for somewhere to hide, but before I could move, a nurse appeared around the corner.

She spotted me, and her expression immediately twisted.

“Hey, you!” she screamed.

I ran.

I tried to get away from her, but somehow she managed to sprint after me in those high heels and grab the back of my shirt, yanking me toward her.

“No! Let me go!” I screamed.

“Oh, you little brat! What were you doing here?” she snapped in her thick accent.

I twisted, trying to break free, but she wrapped both arms around me and started dragging me away.

I kicked backward, desperately trying to stop her.

All I could think about was Baxter.

He was still outside.

Whatever had delayed him couldn’t last forever.

Maybe in another hour he would finally reach the service door and stand there waiting for me, not knowing I had been caught.

The nurse dragged me away while I fought against her the entire way.

I dug my heels into the floor, but it didn’t matter.

She was stronger.

And she definitely wasn’t going to let me go.

I was caught.

By the time we reached our corridor, I was breathing so hard that my chest hurt.

She shoved me into the cell, making me stumble forward and nearly fall.

“You’ll be punished for even trying to escape,” she warned, wrinkling her nose at me.

Then she looked around the cell.

Her expression changed.

Her eyes moved toward Baxter’s empty bed, then to the shelf where he used to keep his small bag with the few belongings we had.

Of course he had taken it with him.

I had packed mine too.

For a second, she only stared.

Then she slammed the door shut, locked it, and hurried away.

I grabbed the bars as tears started gathering in my eyes.

Baxter was gone.

I didn’t know whether that was a good thing or a bad thing.

Maybe they had caught him outside.

Maybe they were bringing him back.

Maybe they were hurting him.

I stayed by the bars for what felt like hours, listening for footsteps and waiting for someone to tell me what had happened to Baxter.

Every time someone passed, I looked up.

Every time a door opened somewhere down the corridor, I expected Baxter to appear.

He never did.

Eventually, one of the nurses came by during her rounds, looking completely casual.

I couldn’t take it anymore.

I had to know where my friend was.

“What happened to my friend?” I called out.

He knew I was waiting.

He had given me that look.

The nurse watched my face as my lips started trembling and tears slipped down my cheeks.

Then she gave a small laugh.

“You really trusted a werewolf?”

My head snapped up.

“You should’ve known better. They’re not exactly known for being trustworthy. They’re werewolves. Part animal.”

She sighed and shook her head, keeping her hands on her waist.

My own hands slowly slipped from the bars.

Baxter had promised.

We were supposed to leave together.

I had stayed behind because I trusted him to open that door.

And he had gotten on the ship without me.

The nurse started to walk away, then stopped and turned back.

“Oh, and Sawyer.”

I looked up.

“Tomorrow is your final session, and your president father will come to take you home. You should be happy here. You have power, wealth, everything you could want.”

Her voice was much softer now.

I froze.

She continued down the corridor.

I stayed there for a long time after she disappeared.

Then I sat beside Baxter’s empty bed.

I stared at it until my vision blurred.

For the first time since he had come into my life, I wished I had never trusted him at all.

I lowered my head and cried.

He hadn’t only betrayed me.

He had betrayed my wolf too.

Tomorrow, they were going to destroy my lycan after Baxter had been the one who convinced me to love it, to accept it, and to give it a chance.

And all of that just so he could leave me behind and go back to that pathetic friend who never stopped calling him.
