Sawyer:
They pulled shit like this all the time, but this time, my father was using far more strength than usual, seemingly without realizing he was going to suffocate me to death.
Trying to defend myself, I reached toward the table and gripped its edge while my mother paced around us, shouting that I didn't understand what it took to become wealthy, maintain our status, or keep powerful people on our side.
Then she started ranting about the war that would eventually break out between werewolves and humans.
According to her, if we didn't have enough powerful werewolves supporting us, we would be overthrown.
It was all bullshit.
My hand found the knife they had brought out for the cake.
I didn't know whether it would even be sharp enough to cut through the belt around my neck, but when the pressure became unbearable, I started moving the knife carefully, trying to frighten my father into letting me go.
Then my hand jerked harder than I intended.
My father screamed.
My mother stopped yapping and spun toward the commotion.
My father let go of the belt.
I felt it loosen around my neck, and I could finally breathe.
I crawled away while my mother rushed to my father's aid.
I reached the corner of the living room and pulled the belt off, only to turn around and see what I had done.
"You fucking psycho! What did you do?" my mother screamed as she slowly moved away from my father, no longer blocking my view.
That was when I realized what I had done.
The knife was embedded deep in my father's right eye socket, and he groaned in agony.
"Oh, you are so dead. You fucking ruined your father's face!" my mother screamed, scrambling to her feet.
She looked around, grabbed a wine bottle, and smashed it against the table. Then she stalked toward me, crouched down, and pointed the jagged bottle at me.
"If your father suffers because of this, or if he loses his eye, you better believe you'll lose one too," she threatened before turning away to call an ambulance.
At the same time, I watched my father writhe in misery.
In that moment, I realized his eye was gone, and mine would be next.
My mother never said things simply out of anger. She made them happen.
And what had they been teaching me only a few minutes ago?
That we had to fight for our survival. If we didn't, those more powerful than us would overthrow us.
"You don't need to call an ambulance," I commented.
My mother turned around and frowned at me while searching for her phone.
I knew where it was. During the struggle, it had fallen beneath the table.
"What did you say?" my mother asked, her voice more of a hiss.
The moment she turned around, I slashed it across her face.
Her screams were mesmerizing.
I'd heard her moan with more men than I could count, but this was the scream I wanted to hear every time I remembered her.
It was a bloodbath.
By the time I was done killing them both, I had calmed down enough to realize what I had done.
I curled up in the corner of the living room and cried, waiting for morning to come.
It was my fucking birthday, and the entire living room had turned red.
Every time I looked at them, I cried harder.
Then, finally, I heard footsteps approaching.
It was Mr. Bruno, Nina's father.
He walked in and gasped at the sight before quickly turning around to lock the door.
It took him some time to get the answers out of me, and what he said next left me in complete and utter shock.
"Don't tell anyone. We'll say they killed each other. They were both mean and selfish anyway. But together, we can rebuild this whole throne. I'll be your right-hand man. I'll teach you everything."
At that moment, I knew he was doing all of this for his own benefit, but I needed someone on my side.
His plan worked, and when I turned twenty, I became the youngest president ever.
