Baxter:
In a split second, I rushed after him.
The moment his claws began to dig into Madeline's chest, I stepped between them and drove my own claw straight into Sawyer's chest.
For a moment, none of us moved.
Everyone watched in horror as the three of us stood tangled together, panic spreading through the crowd.
Sawyer's claws were partially buried in Madeline's skin, while mine was completely inside his chest, wrapped around his heart.
Sawyer looked at me as his body began to tremble.
Madeline gasped beside us, her hands shaking uncontrollably.
I had only seconds to make a decision. If I didn't pull Sawyer's heart out, his claws would tear through Madeline's ribs and reach hers.
He would kill her instantly.
But if I stopped him, I would have to kill my friend.
"This is your chance to pick me," Sawyer whispered, his lower lip trembling.
"It didn't have to be like this," I told him, my breathing turning erratic.
Memories of our past came crashing into me.
Our tree.
The moment I looked into Sawyer's eyes, I remembered sitting beside him there.
I remembered the fire blazing around our tree, the two of us causing trouble for everyone at the hospital, and the sound of our giggles and laughter echoing through the hallways.
Whenever anyone found us together, we were usually stealing something from someone.
And now we stood face-to-face, our hands buried in the people who mattered most to us.
My hand held Sawyer's heart.
His held my entire life.
Then the memories of our friendship were overtaken by everything I had shared with Madeline.
Madeline.
Even her name seemed to bring back the sweet scent of her, making my head go numb.
I remembered the way she used to keep me sane whenever I had panic attacks as a child.
The two of us would sit beneath the old ruined tree for hours, talking while I lit a small fire nearby.
We would bring vegetables from home and cook them over the flames ourselves.
Sometimes the food came out completely bland, and other times we used so much spice that it was almost impossible to eat.
But we enjoyed every bit of it.
Then we had our children.
I remembered the last time I had held her in my arms.
I refused to let that remain the last time.
It couldn't be.
I wanted an entire life with her. I wanted to grow old beside her.
I'd only learned the full truth last night after calling Nina's father in the human world and asking him to confirm everything.
The guilt still weighed heavily on me.
I wished there had been another choice, but Sawyer hadn't left me one.
He was going to kill my innocent Madeline.
She came up behind me and wrapped her arms around me, pressing her face against my back while I rested a hand over the empty wound in Sawyer's chest.
"It's okay. Everything will be okay," Madeline murmured.
She released me and sat down beside me, taking one of my hands in hers before pressing a kiss to the back of it.
I slowly pulled my other hand away from Sawyer's chest and turned toward her.
I had barely drawn Madeline into my arms when a woman's voice came from behind us.
"We're truly sorry for what we've done. Will you be able to forgive us?"
We broke apart and turned toward the crowd.
They were all on their knees with their heads bowed.
"We'll do everything we can to help you find the people who were involved in your kidnapping and torture," a man promised, lifting his gaze and offering us a weak smile.
I turned back to Madeline and gently cupped her face in my hands before kissing her lips.
"Let's go home. Let's reunite with everyone first," I told her.
She nodded before wrapping her arms around me again and breaking into tears.
