Act Like You Love Me (Jessica) novel Chapter 139

Chapter 139

Jessica’s POV

“Where’s my little…” Aaron’s voice trailed off the second he crossed the threshold of Adrian’s room.

I immediately pressed my index finger to my lips, signaling him to shush. The silence in the room was hard-won; it had taken nearly an hour of reading and back-rubbing to get the boy to drift off.

Aaron realized his mistake instantly, his expression softening into one of sheepish guilt.

He began to tiptoe toward us, his polished shoes silent on the rug. He looked like a giant trying to walk through a field of eggshells.

At the edge of the bed, he carefully dropped the mountain of shopping bags he was carrying.

I looked at the bags and then back at him, my eyebrows climbing toward my hairline in a look of blatant disapproval.

“Aaron, that’s too much, don’t you think?” I whispered, keeping my voice low.

“In the past few weeks, you’ve bought him so many things they can barely fit in his closet. We’re going to need a bigger space just for his sneakers.”

I was exaggerating, but only slightly. Aaron had been on a spree since we’d reunited, as if he were trying to pack years of missed birthdays into a single hour.

He raised a brow as he shrugged out of his suit jacket, tossing it over the back of a chair.

He looked ruggedly handsome even after a day of corporate warfare-shirt sleeves rolled up, tie loosened, a five-o’clock shadow darkening his jaw.

“Uhm, Jess? That’s kind of the point.”

I rolled my eyes, leaning back against the headboard. “Aaron, seriously…”

“I’m sorry, but I’m not listening to you on this one,” he said, his tone playful but firm.

“My son deserves every good thing. As a matter of fact, he’ll have two closets in our new home. One for the everyday stuff, and one for the ‘Superstar Jr. collection.”

My mouth fell open. Two things had me stunned: the sheer absurdity of a toddler having two closets, and the way the words “our new home” rolled off his tongue so effortlessly. It wasn’t just a suggestion; it was a promise.

He was truly, deeply serious about us being a family.

But the warmth of that thought was quickly chilled by the reality of the calendar.

The day everything could change. The day the reality of his other life, his other obligations, would come knocking.

Tomorrow. The wedding was tomorrow.

Aaron sat on the edge of the bed opposite me. I couldn’t stop staring at him, tracing the lines of his face in the soft glow of the dinosaur nightlight.

He didn’t notice my scrutiny; his entire world was centered on the small, breathing mound under the covers.

He reached out, his large, calloused hand looking so gentle against Adrian’s soft skin as he smoothed back a stray lock of

hair.

He leaned in, and pressed a lingering kiss to Adrian’s forehead.

As if sensing my gaze, he looked up, his dark eyes meeting mine.

“He had a long day?” he asked softly.

I nodded, though my face shifted into a mock scowl. “Yup. And do you know why?”

He smirked, already knowing the answer. “Tell me.”

“Because of the video games you got him. He spent three hours trying to beat a level, and when I finally told him it was time for bed, he looked at me like I’d just cancelled Christmas. He’s as stubborn as his father.”
