Chapter 4
I could barely breathe and walked out of the private room.
Behind me, Kaelan’s panicked voice rang out.
“Avelaine, let me explain! That was just a lie to get Betsy out of an awkward situation. She’s my aide-as her CO, I couldn’t just stand there and watch her get harassed. You understand that, right?”
I pulled my hand free, smiling calmly. “No need to explain. I understand.”
I understood that was the truth you didn’t dare admit.
Despite getting the answer he wanted, Kaelan didn’t feel reassured. That sense of panic surged up again, and he reached for my wrist.
“Avelaine, why are you-”
Before he could finish, Betsy caught up, her voice thick with tears.
“Kaelan, please drive me back to the base dorms. I’m scared he’ll come after me again, and my leg still hurts…”
Kaelan hesitated for just a second. My ride had just arrived.
Without sparing them another glance, I got in the car.
Back home, I shipped my luggage ahead to Virginia, keeping only a tactical backpack.
Then came another knock.
Kaelan grabbed my wrist the moment I opened the door, his voice exploding with anger:
“Why did you bribe Betsy’s family to make a scene at base? To force her to discharge and go back home to marry some paralyzed old man?!”
Behind him, Betsy stood in her service uniform, crying like a broken-hearted wreck.
“Avelaine Campbell, I just want to stay on base and keep working with him. Why are you so vicious?”
“I worked so hard to get out of the slum. I don’t want to leave the military. I don’t want to go back and marry some old man!”
I was completely lost. “What bribe? I don’t know what you’re talking about!”
Kaelan was convinced I was lying.
“Her family said it themselves-a woman surnamed Campbell gave them money to come make trouble at the base! If I hadn’t stopped them, they would’ve dragged her back today!”
He suddenly let go, and I stumbled to the floor, scraping my palm.
A life without Kaelan Sherwood.
Meanwhile, Kaelan was at the base disciplinary office with Betsy, waiting for her situation to be reviewed.
As they waited, his phone exploded with messages in the group chat.
[Did you hear? That SEAL Team Six Admiral from Virginia is getting married. I just got the invitation.]
[I thought he’d stay single forever. Can’t wait to see who managed to win him.]
Kaelan was curious too. He scrolled through the messages.
Then he froze.
His eyes widened, horror flooding through him.
The names printed clearly on the invitation were-
Groom: Frederic Spencer
Bride: Avelaine Campbell!
