Adopted to Biological? Keep Your Golden Child Scapegoat Out novel Chapter 15

Chapter 5

BOOM-

Kaelan’s mind went completely blank. His eyes were glued to Avelaine’s name on his phone screen.

She went to Virginia… to marry Frederic Spencer?

His hand holding the phone wouldn’t stop trembling as he turned to his teammate.

“She’s just jealous and mad, right? She made a fake wedding invitation with some other guy’s name on it to scare me!”

His comrade glanced at Betsy in the office, unable to bring himself to shatter the illusion.

“Kaelan, why don’t you just call Avelaine and ask?”

As if grabbing onto the last piece of driftwood in a storm, Kaelan fumbled to dial that familiar number.

But all he heard was the cold, mechanical voice-

[Sorry, the number you have dialed is currently unavailable.]

He switched to the military network to message her.

A red exclamation mark popped up instantly.

His teammate finally couldn’t watch anymore.

“Kaelan, back at West Point, you couldn’t stand Betsy. Now she’s your aide and you defend her at every turn. Avelaine’s smart-how could she not notice?”

The words hit like thunder. That’s when Kaelan remembered all the details he’d ignored:

On our anniversary, he let Betsy ruin the decorations and then dumped me to take her to the hospital after she got hit by a car.

At the reunion, he told everyone in front of me that Betsy was “his woman.”

He even pushed me down and forced me to apologize-all because of Betsy’s lies.

Overwhelming regret crashed over him.

Kaelan drove like crazy toward my dorm, blowing through several base checkpoints.

But when the door finally opened, a newly transferred female soldier answered.

Then a duty officer walked out carrying a cardboard box, saying casually.

“Dr. Campbell already transferred to Virginia. These are the things she left behind.”

The officer tossed the box-filled with military medals, matching couple watches, and academy keepsakes-into the storage

room.

Kaelan’s world completely collapsed.

In a daze, he wandered to the training grounds we used to visit together.

A young couple was arguing-until the boy swore up and down he only loved the girl, making her burst into teary laughter.

It reminded him of how calm Avelaine had been years ago when she once heard about Betsy confessing to him:

“I know you’ll turn her down. I trust us.”
