Chapter 8
Frederic squeezed my hand, his eyes full of heartache.
He knew Kaelan had dragged out our engagement, but he hadn’t known just how much I’d suffered.
I turned to him and gave a calm smile, signaling that the past pains were no longer worth mentioning.
Kaelan stared at our intertwined hands, his heart twisting like it was being carved out with a knife.
His eyes turned red, his voice breaking as he begged. “I’m sorry, Avelaine. I know I was wrong.”
“I only pitied Betsy for chasing me all these years. You’re the only one I’ve ever loved.”
“I’ve already cut ties with her. Can you please forgive me?”
“I already have someone new.” I shook my head, my tone firm.
“Frederic gives me complete care and love. He won’t let me suffer.”
“If you really feel guilty, then leave Virginia. Don’t disrupt our wedding.”
With that, I took Frederic’s hand and walked away without looking back.
Kaelan watched us go and could no longer bear it. Finally, he collapsed to his knees.
He remembered that summer when I was twenty-three. When he found out I was heading to Africa for counter-terror mission, he’d grabbed my hand, nearly in tears.
“Avelaine, promise me-you’ll come back and marry me when the mission is done!”
I’d smiled and nodded back then. “Yeah. We’ll get married when I return.”
But now, he was the one who’d postponed the wedding for five years. He was the one who’d pushed me into someone else’s
arms.
Kaelan slammed his fist into the ground. Blood mixed with tears, spreading across the pavement in a glaring red stain.
He knew-there was truly no going back for us now.
“Kaelan!”
Betsy’s voice suddenly rang out. She rushed over, trying to help him up.
“See? Avelaine’s fickle. Only I’ll love you forever. Let’s go back to North Carolina, okay?”
Chapter 8
“Shut up!”
Kaelan flung her away with fierce cold in his eyes. “I won’t let you slander Avelaine. I’m the one who hurt her!”
Betsy stumbled back, her eyes full of resentment. “I’ve been by your side all these years! Can’t you just look at me once? For
you, my own parents even-”
She stopped mid-sentence.
Kaelan’s sharp instincts caught the slip. He stood and stepped toward her slowly. “What about your parents?”
Betsy’s eyes darted away, her voice trembling. “You heard wrong…”
Kaelan grabbed her wrist, his tone terrifying.
“You’re hiding something from me! Won’t talk? Fine. I’ll investigate it myself!”
He threw her to the ground like discarded trash, ordered his guard to watch her, then messaged Intelligence Analyst chief to dig into Betsy’s recent movements.
Half an hour later, the Intelligence Analyst chief sent over the report.
