Chapter 10
Just as the blade was about to come down, a figure suddenly lunged forward and grabbed the knife with his bare hand-
Blood gushed from between his fingers.
“Avelaine, run!” Kaelan roared through gritted teeth, fighting the pain.
I froze for a moment, then spotted Frederic and the guards rushing toward us from a distance. I bit down hard, scrambled to my feet, and ran toward Frederic with everything I had.
The moment I collapsed into his arms, I finally let out a breath. “Frederic, save Kaelan-quick!”
The guards surged forward and restrained the hysterical Betsy.
Even pinned down, she kept screaming. “Avelaine Campbell, I’ll never let you go!”
Kaelan didn’t look at his bleeding hand. His eyes stayed locked on me.
Seeing that I was unharmed, he managed a weak smile. “As long as you’re safe.”.
I stared at the deep gash in his palm, bone visible beneath the torn flesh. My feelings were complicated.
When Betsy had taken me hostage earlier, I had torn the medal from my ceremonial uniform and thrown it to the ground. I never imagined Kaelan would be the first one to find me.
“You should go to the hospital and get that treated.”
Kaelan shook his head. His gaze fell on Frederic’s arm wrapped around my waist. His eyes were filled with sorrow.
“Avelaine, I’m going back to North Carolina.”
“Because of me, you wasted five years. You almost died today. I have no right to show my face in front of you anymore.”
“I’ve known for a long time that you’d never forgive me. I just didn’t want to admit it.”
He paused, his voice hoarse. “Now that you’ve found new happiness, I should let you go.”
“Kaelan, let’s just leave the past in the past.”
I looked at him, my tone calm. “No matter what, thank you.”
In that moment when he threw himself in front of me, all the grudges between us dissolved into nothing.
Kaelan waved his hand dismissively, forcing himself to look away. He turned and walked off with long strides, never looking
back.
Chapter 10
Frederic held me tightly in his arms, his voice shaken. “I’m sorry, Avelaine. I failed to protect you.”
“This wasn’t your fault. Betsy had this planned all along.”
I hugged him back, my voice soft and reassuring.
Frederic buried his face in my shoulder, his voice muffled.
“So… you won’t want to go back to North Carolina with him?”
I couldn’t help but laugh. So that’s what he’d been worried about.
