Chapter 3
That day, I came home from school and found Sienna flipping through my diary.
“What are you doing?!” I lunged forward, trying to snatch it back.
She sidestepped easily, a faint smirk playing at her lips.
“Just checking what my dear little sister writes about every day.”
“I wish I could go back to when I was little… Why don’t Mom and Dad love me anymore… I feel so wronged.””
“Give it back!” My voice was shaking.
That diary held all my vulnerability. All my secrets.
She stood up, holding it high above her head.
“Let’s show Mom and Dad what their ungrateful adopted daughter complains about every day!”
Then she bolted out of the room with it.
“Sienna!” I chased after her, desperate to get it back.
But in the chaos of us running, she lost her footing-and suddenly tumbled down the stairs.
“Ahhh-”
Her scream tore through the entire house.
Mom and Dad burst out of the study at the same time.
“Sienna!”
Mom was the first to reach her, staring at her twisted right leg, her voice trembling.
Sienna was sobbing hysterically, her finger pointed straight at me-still frozen at the top of the stairs.
“She pushed me… she wrote in her diary that she hates me for stealing Mom and Dad’s love, so she pushed me down…”
“No! That’s not-” I tried to explain. “I didn’t-”
“Enough!” Dad yelled at me for the first time. Loud. Furious.
Mom looked at me, her eyes cold in a way that terrified me.
“What diary?”
Chapter 3
“She was snooping through my diary…” I tried to tell the truth.
“So you pushed her?” Mom cut me off. “Scarlett, how could you be so vicious?”
“I didn’t push her!” The tears finally spilled over. “She fell on her own!”
“Still lying!”
Mom’s hand flew up and slapped me hard across the face.
The sting burned my cheek, but the pain in my chest was worse.
Dad stood behind her, his eyes filled with disappointment.
“Scarlett, we always thought you were a good kid.”
“Even though you’re not our biological daughter, we never treated you poorly. But you…”
“I told you it wasn’t me!” I was nearly screaming now. “Why won’t you ever believe me?”
“Believe you?” Mom scoffed. “Believe a liar?”
The ambulance came.
As the paramedics carried Sienna downstairs on a stretcher, she was still sobbing.
“Mom, I’m so scared… does she hate me that much…”
“Don’t be scared, baby. Mommy’s here.”
Mom clutched her hand tightly. She didn’t look at me once.
That night, Mom and Dad came back from the hospital late.
I heard their footsteps stop outside my door.
“Pack your things.” Mom pushed the door open, her voice terrifyingly calm. “You’re moving to the old house tomorrow.”
I froze. Then I dropped to my knees.
“No! Please, Mom, Dad, don’t make me leavel I’ll be good, I promise, I’ll listen to everything you say-”
Mom stared down at me coldly.
“Your sister needs to recover. Seeing you makes her feel unsafe.”
“I won’t bother her! I swear!” I sobbed, grabbing onto Mom’s leg.
“I can stay in the storage room. I can wait until you’re all asleep before I come home. Please don’t give up on me…”
Chapter 3
Dad let out a heavy sigh.
“Scarlett, this is for your own good. And for this family.”
“I’m not leaving! This is MY home!” I was crying so hard I could barely breathe.
Mom pried my hands off her leg, forcefully.
