Chapter 5
Chapter 5
Sienna’s PTSD kept spiraling. Between that and the Commission burying him in work, Dante couldn’t catch a breath.
He knew what happened that night had crossed a line. That esper didn’t deserve it.
But after ten years in the trenches together, he figured she’d come around. She’d see he didn’t have a choice.
They always worked it out. Always.
Finally got a wir w between jobs. Drove straight to Vespers place.
Hit the scanner win his thumb. Thing screeched at him.
ACCESS DENIED. AUTHORIZATION REVOKED.
Something cold dropped in his stomach. He fixed his collar. Knocked hard.
“Vesper. Open up. We gotta talk.”
Door swung open.
Some kid in a logistics jumpsuit poked his head out. Clocked the Underboss pin on Dante’s jacket. Eyes went wide.
“Uh-sir. Vesper signed out five days ago. Turned in her keys cleared her stuff. We’re prepping the unit for reassignment.”
Dante’s pulse kicked up. “Where is she? What assignment?”
Kid shook his head. “Her file says permanent exit. Only the Boss knows where she went.”
Dante made it back to his apartment on autopilot.
Sienna was already awake, padding around in one of his Tshirts. Gave him that worried look she’d perfected.
She’d been crashing here for weeks, Said she couldn’t be alone.
“Dante, where’d you go?”
He stared at her-soft, needy, always needing something-a felt his jaw tighten.
Used to drive him crazy that Vesper never asked for help. No
leaned on him. Now this constant neediness felt like
a noose.
Chapter 5
“Went to see Vesper.”
Sienna’s face flickered. Just for a second. Then she grabbed His arm, all concern.
“She didn’t hurt you, did she? You know how she is. Unpredictable.
“If she won’t forgive you… I could go. Talk to her. Make her understand.”
Tears started forming.
“Don’t bother.” Dante pulled away. Felt hollow. “She’s… gone!”
Sienna studied his face. Buried the rush of victory deep. Kept her voice small.
“Gone? Like… the boss sent her undercover somewhere?”
Dante shook his head.
The guy who’d walked through gunfire without flinching-his eyes were burning now.
Voice came out raw. “No. She… vanished. No note. No forwarding address. Nothing.”
