In an instant, a chill ran down Charles’s spine.
He even stood up abruptly, losing his composure.
“Charles, what’s wrong?”
Flora quickly got to her feet. Seeing the grim look on his face as he stared at his phone, she tried to peek.
But Charles had already turned the screen off.
“I need to take care of something.”
He had been to the Evernight estate before, so he turned the corner and went into the guest bathroom.
In disbelief, he read the messages again. He confirmed that Aria’s video was real, and a ridiculous thought struck him.
If Aria’s video was real, then Flora’s was fake.
It wasn’t Aria who bullied Flora, but Flora who bullied Aria!
His friend was still typing: [But didn't you and Aria break up? Why are you only investigating this now?]
When Charles and Aria were dating, they hadn't tried to hide it. He had brought her to events, so all his friends knew they were a couple.
However, some of them weren't aware of the other complicated relationships between them.
Charles took a deep breath. [Yes. I’m getting married. To Flora.]
[Caleb Thorne: Flora? Flora? The one who went to the same high school as Aria? How is it her?????]
Five question marks appeared in a row.
[Charles: Is there a problem?]
[Caleb: Do you really not know, or are you pretending? When you and Aria started dating, Flora threw a massive fit.]
Charles pursed his lips.
He and Aria had gotten together after she graduated. Back then, his hands hadn't been injured, and his focus was entirely on Aria and his studies.
He never had time to get to know anyone else.
Aria was like a hedgehog with its quills raised. The look she gave Charles was no longer soft and dependent, but filled with cold resolve.
He felt a sharp pang in his chest, and his breathing hitched.
Somehow, without him even realizing it, he and Aria had ended up like this.
“Fine. I understand.”
“Charles!” Flora’s voice was laced with panic. “What’s gotten into you? Lilith gave up her most cherished house to help us. Why are you backing down now?”
Barely ten minutes had passed. Why had Charles changed so drastically?
Charles used to think Flora targeted Aria because of some lingering trauma from being bullied, but now it seemed that wasn't the case.
She held a deep-seated hostility toward Aria.
Her past tenderness now seemed to have a different meaning.
“Leave the house to Aria. Let’s go back. I’ll figure something out for Harold.”
