“Aria.” Raphael reached out to steady her, his voice cool. “Let go. She’s still injured.”
Mira suddenly remembered Aria's injuries and quickly released her, checking her face for any signs of discomfort. Seeing her complexion was fine, she breathed a sigh of relief.
Alden glanced at Raphael, then back at Mira. “What are you so excited about? It’s just a peripheral position, not a core researcher.”
Mira didn’t care at all, hugging the contract tightly. “To be part of such a major project, I’d be willing to wash beakers every day!”
And it was true. It was better to be a small part of something great than the leader of something mediocre.
A government-level project was on a completely different plane than a core role in a regular one. Even if Mira couldn’t access the core research, what she could learn would be far more valuable than anything from a normal study.

Flora returned to Lilith’s hospital room.
Lilith’s face was deathly pale. Roxanne was sitting by her side, already sensing that her daughter’s time was running out.
“Mom, I love Gideon so much. Why couldn’t I be the one to marry him? I tried everything I could, but I still couldn’t win against Aria…” Lilith’s voice was weak, her gaze unfocused.
A lump formed in Flora’s throat. Seeing Lilith like this, her simmering hatred for Aria burned even hotter.
Aria was nothing but a shameful secret—an illegitimate child who should have never seen the light of day. If she hadn't been switched at birth, she never would have met Charles. She never would have met Alden through him, and she never would have had the chance to marry Gideon.
“Mom, why did they have to switch me at birth? It’s not fair…” Lilith coughed twice, then suddenly coughed up a large mouthful of blood.
Roxanne’s tears fell even faster. “Lilith! Oh, Lilith... Mom will make sure you get what you want. I’ll make sure you marry Gideon. Just hold on!”
Roxanne asked Flora to stay and watch Lilith, then ran out of the room, wiping her tears.
Nurses and doctors rushed in, administering a flood of emergency drugs into Lilith’s system.
