This was the first time Nathan had ever been treated like something unclean, and his anger flared.
His voice rose. "If Aria hadn't poisoned and murdered Lilith, nothing would have happened to her! Since Aria has already been disowned by the Rowan family, this matter should be your Evernight family's responsibility!"
Eveline's eyes widened in disbelief.
Did she hear that right?
Aria, a murderer?
And she killed Lilith?
Had she lost her mind?
However, if Aria really did kill someone, the Evernight family certainly wouldn't cover for her!
"What do you want?" Aldous Evernight asked after a moment of silence. "State your terms."
"Dad! How can you still choose to protect Aria at a time like this?! She broke the law! When the police come knocking, the Evernight family's reputation will be ruined!"
She couldn't understand how Aldous Evernight, who had always prized his reputation above all else, could forgive Aria so easily. He hadn't even investigated anything and was just accepting Nathan's threats!
Aria also couldn't believe that her grandfather had caved to Nathan's threats so readily.
Was it just that old age made people more confused?
Aria discreetly studied Aldous Evernight's expression.
No.
Aldous Evernight was far from senile. On the contrary, his rise from a son-in-law who married into the family to the head of the Evernight dynasty proved he was no fool. He never made a losing deal.
Aldous must have a purpose for doing this; Aria just didn't know what it was yet.
Could it be that the old man still wanted her and Gideon to have a child?
He probably didn't know about her uterus, so he still thought she could get pregnant.
That was the only possibility Aria could think of right now.
"Whether it's you or Dawn, I will not allow any possibility of delay!"
Aldous's voice turned inexplicably cold.
"I consider throwing a few scraps to a stray dog my good deed for the day."
Nathan's expression soured even more, but he had no way to argue.
The Rowan family was a shadow of its former self. He had only made such a serious accusation because he was worried the Evernight family would abandon Aria.
In reality, he had no evidence that Aria had killed anyone.
But fortunately, the outcome was good.
Nathan shamelessly took out a prepared contract and handed it to Aldous Evernight. "Sir, if there are no problems, just sign this, and we'll consider the matter settled."
Aria snatched the document and quickly scanned it.
"Nathan, you've got some nerve. Trying to blackmail the Evernight family for a hundred million dollars over Lilith's death. You and Roxanne really are a perfect match."
