Her eyes were filled with tears, a picture of misery. But Gideon remained unmoved. “What were you saying about Lilith?”
Aria had thought Gideon was actually coming to her rescue, but it was still all about Lilith.
A low laugh escaped her lips, her heart feeling as if it had been torn wide open. It was a laugh for her own foolishness, for the three years of suffering. Gideon didn't deserve her love.
“I said, Lilith doesn’t have a late-stage bone tumor. She doesn’t need umbilical cord blood. So, can we get a divorce now?” Aria pushed herself into a sitting position, her eyes numb as she looked at Gideon.
For some reason, a flicker of panic stirred in Gideon’s chest. “What do you mean by that?”
He had just consulted other doctors, and they had all confirmed it was a late-stage tumor. Why was Aria so insistent that it wasn’t?
“There’s a discrepancy between her blood work and the biopsy results. It’s cancer, but it’s definitely not late-stage. The blood counts for a late-stage patient would be much lower. Her counts are high because Lilith has been on medication.”
The best medicine, which Gideon had spared no expense on for Lilith. That's why she was still up and about.
And Aria dared to question the diagnosis? She was just a secretary who started working for him right after graduating college. What professional knowledge could she possibly have? And he had actually believed her for a second. It was laughable.
Aria’s eyelids felt heavy. She shook her head hard, a growing heat spreading through her body. Something was wrong…
The medicine, there was something wrong with it!
A feverish heat began to crawl beneath Aria’s skin, her vision blurring as her breath hitched in short, frantic gasps.
Gideon bent down and scooped her into his arms. The woman in his embrace struggled and trembled. Her fierce resistance puzzled him.
“Aria, if you just behave, I don’t have to divorce you.”
Even if Aria got pregnant, she could find ways to get rid of it if she didn’t want the baby. To ensure the child was born, he needed Aria to be willing. In the past, Aria had been obedient. But now, Lilith didn’t have much time to wait.
Gideon looked down, his rough thumb wiping the tears from Aria’s face. He softened his voice. “You were suggesting we collaborate with that traditional medicine specialist, weren’t you? I can consider it, and I’ll even increase your commission…”
Before he could finish, Aria couldn’t stop herself from cursing him.
“I am serious about the divorce, and I’m serious about quitting. I don’t love you anymore. You don’t have to pretend to be nice to me. I’m certain Lilith isn’t in the late stage. And do you have any idea how disgusting you are to me right now? Can you just not touch me? You’re so shameless, making me have a baby to save your lover. If you dare touch me today, I will sue you for marital rape, and we’ll both go down in flames! You bastard!”
