Aria raised an eyebrow. "If you can be here, why can't I?"

"Aren't you two divorced?"

Aria scoffed and rolled her eyes. "You're awfully nosy for an old witch. What business is it of yours? Just pay up."

Roxanne's expression darkened. She had come hoping Gideon would show mercy so she could pocket the money Bradley gave her. But with Aria standing right there, she didn't know how to breach the topic.

"Gideon, I brought you some chicken soup," Roxanne said, setting a thermos on the table.

Gideon kept his eyes fixed on Aria. He barely registered Roxanne's words, offering only a dismissive hum.

Roxanne glared at Aria. Seeing that she had no intention of leaving, Roxanne couldn't help but snap. "Aria, you and Gideon are divorced. It's wildly inappropriate for a single man and woman to be alone in a room together."

Aria was staying purely for the entertainment. She knew exactly what Roxanne was trying to do. If Roxanne didn't beg Gideon to drop the debt today, the lawyers would be unleashed tomorrow. Aria wanted to see just how low Roxanne would stoop for the money.

"You!" Roxanne ground her teeth. "I saved your life! Do you have no conscience at all?"

He hadn't realized the Rowan family was so broke they were using a funeral as an excuse. Real or not, the dead deserved respect. But Gideon had already promised to let Aria handle the situation entirely.

"If the Rowan family can't even afford a funeral, my assistant will arrange and fund everything."

Roxanne's forced smile froze. "Lilith was my daughter. How could I let you handle her funeral? I'm not refusing to pay the debt. I just need time."

Gideon glanced at Aria. For some reason, he got the distinct impression that Aria expected him to cave to Roxanne's excuses. His tone hardened instantly.

"There is nothing left to discuss. You defrauded the Evernight family and Aria. That money never belonged to you. If you can't pay it back, that's your problem."
