Gideon opened his mouth.
He wanted to say something, but the disappointment in Aria's eyes stung him.
"You were the one who forced my mother to read those words. Otherwise, she wouldn't have been so angry."
"Then she could have chosen not to read them."
One minute she's agreeing to a settlement, the next she's hitting her.
The evidence was so clear this time. Aria would not let Eveline get away with it again.
"What's all this commotion?"
A gruff, elderly voice came from the doorway.
Gideon looked over. "Grandfather, what are you doing here?"
"If I didn't come, who would clean up your mess?"
Old Mr. Evernight gave a look, and the assistant beside him walked over to the female officer and whispered a few words to her.
The officer froze for a moment, then slowly released her grip on Eveline.
Eveline broke free and immediately ran to Old Mr. Evernight, crying. "Father! You have to stand up for me! Not only did Aria humiliate me, but she also said I wasn't a good woman!"
"I've given everything for this family! When I was pregnant with Gideon, I was sick all the time with morning sickness, but I endured it all! For her to say that to me... I... I don't want to live anymore!"
Old Mr. Evernight slammed his cane on the ground and snapped, "Quiet! All this talk about dying is tiresome. Don't you find it distasteful?"
Eveline quickly shut her mouth, but her sobs continued.
"Aria, for the Evernight family, producing an heir is the most important thing. You have no right to say such things to Eveline! You, on the other hand, have been married for three years and haven't produced a single child!"
To the Evernight family, a woman's greatest purpose was to bear children.
Since Aria had not produced an heir, in their eyes, she was the bad one.
Aria's hands clenched into tight fists.
"And you even brought this shame to a police station," Old Mr. Evernight said with a cold laugh. "If there's a next time, I won't let you set foot outside the Evernight estate again!"
"Grandfather, they were both in the wrong. Let's just put this behind us today. Aria knows she was wrong, too."
Gideon moved to the old man's side to placate him.
