"Wedding gifts?" Adelina looked over at Natalie and lowered her voice. "Isabella and Ethan have been married for months. Why are we still talking about wedding gifts?"

"Jackson," Ethan started, "when I gave Isabella those wedding gifts, I was clear they were for her alone. My mom tried to talk to her, even just to let me take half, but Natalie refused and yelled at her. She drew a breath, her voice steady. "But I’m done staying quiet. I want my gifts back. Ethan gave them to me. Why should Natalie get to keep them? She didn’t raise me. You did, Jackson, and I’m grateful, but my mom raised Jordan too. If I owe you, then Jordan owes my mom just as much."
