Mike walked over and asked politely, “Isabella, should we bring the stuff from the car inside?”

She paused for a second, thinking it over. “Yeah, take everything upstairs and put it in the room I used to stay in.” She hadn’t been in that room since Jennifer’s visit, when she’d cleared it out and never moved back in. Now it just sat there, empty, and it was the perfect place to stash the wedding gifts Ethan had gotten back for her.

She didn’t want to bring them to her own place. In her mind, the divorce with Ethan was still inevitable. When that happened, he might ask for the gifts back. There was no point getting attached to them. If Ethan ended up letting her keep them after the split, she could always take them then.

“Okay.” Mike nodded and headed off with the bodyguards to unload everything.

Meanwhile, Susan brought over a plate of fruit and some pastries, but Isabella barely glanced at them. She sat quietly, waiting while the gifts were carried up and put away. Once everything was settled, she got up to leave.

Susan walked with her to the door, worry all over her face. “Isabella, will you be coming home tonight?”

“I’ve been swamped lately. My nights end really late. It’s probably better if I don’t come back, so I don’t disturb him.”

Susan shook her head. “You wouldn’t be disturbing him. Honestly, Ethan would be over the moon if you came home. And you shouldn’t be working yourself so hard. Staying up late isn’t good for you. You know Ethan can take care of you, right? You don’t have to push yourself like this.”

Isabella gave a small smile. “I’ve got two hands. I can take care of myself. I might not make a ton of money, but I can still get by. I don’t want to live my life waiting for someone else to give me things.”

Susan sighed to herself. She could see that Isabella was working so hard because she wanted to break free from Ethan. He had changed, but Isabella had changed even more. Susan could still remember the day Isabella had come back from her parents’ house. Something had been different about her since then. Sometimes it felt like she’d turned into a completely new person.
