Isabella held his gaze for a moment, then said, “If I ever need your help, I’ll ask. No need to stand on ceremony with you.”
Her last life had been a mess, and it all started with him tricking her into marriage. Now that he’d made this kind of promise, she decided she wouldn’t hesitate to take him up on it if she ever hit a wall she couldn’t get past on her own.
“You should go home and get some rest,” she said, her tone gentle but firm. “My mom and my uncle are here with me.”
“Let me take care of you these next few days. This happened because of me. It’s only right that I look after you.”
She shook her head. “No, really. Go home, take a day to yourself, and get back to your life.”
Ethan felt a heavy sigh build in his chest. Deep down, he knew she was really done with him. Whatever feelings she’d once had were gone now.
“I’ll go when your mom gets here,” he finally said. If she wouldn’t let him help, at least he could visit every day. Even if they filed for divorce next week, there was still a month-long cooling-off period. Maybe he could use that time to change her mind, or at least earn her forgiveness. It was a long shot, but he had to try.
A knock sounded at the door.
Ethan went to open it. Laura and Jesse were there, along with Harold and Barbara.
“Mr. Adams, we came to check on Isabella. How is she?” Laura asked, worry written all over her face. They’d only heard about what happened from the news. Earlier that morning, they’d come by the hospital, but Isabella was still unconscious. Ethan had asked them to wait until she woke up. He hadn’t even had the energy to call them when she finally came around, just over an hour ago.
“Did they catch the kidnappers?” Harold asked, his voice serious.
Jesse added, “If you need anything, just let us know. And you should figure out whether this was just about money or if someone else was behind it. If there’s a mastermind, you need to watch out for another attack.”
Ethan fell quiet for a moment before answering, “Everything the news said is true.” He knew they’d seen the reports. “So far, all I’ve found is that they wanted money. There’s no sign of a mastermind yet.”
“The guy in charge, Bruce, pulled together a bunch of desperate guys. They’re all broke from gambling, spend money like there’s no tomorrow, and owe a ton of debt. They thought kidnapping a rich guy would be their ticket out,” Ethan said, a tired sort of smile crossing his face. “In all of Cabinda, the Adams family’s the wealthiest, and as the head of the family, I just got unlucky. The police said they’d been watching me for days before they made their move.”
