“I don’t think being with you would make me a laughingstock in high society. This is between us. It has nothing to do with anyone else. Let people say what they want. We just need to live our own lives and be happy.”
“Besides, our families aren’t that different. You haven’t even given me a chance to try, so how can you be so sure I wouldn’t fit in?”
“My family runs a business. So does yours. We’re actually pretty well matched.”
“Laura, just give me a chance. Give yourself a chance too, okay?”
“We haven’t even tried, so how do we know if we’d work out? Let’s try dating for a year. If you still think I’m not right for you, you can break up with me. I’ll accept it.”
Laura met his gaze, and for a moment, neither of them spoke.
She remembered what Linda had told her. Linda said her family’s business was doing better these days because Jesse had been helping behind the scenes, introducing clients and opportunities. Laura knew Jesse understood her worries, so he tried to quietly fix things, trying to close the gap between them.
Linda also told her not to judge Jesse just because of what happened with Isabella’s marriage. Ethan being a jerk didn’t mean every guy in Cabinda was the same. Jesse was a good guy. So was Harold. Coming from Linda, that meant a lot. If Linda approved, Jesse must really be a decent person.
“Jesse, you haven’t had breakfast yet, have you? There’s still some left inside. Why don’t you come in and have some?”
Laura changed the subject. She wasn’t going to say yes to him just because he’d helped her family. She needed time to think about it. She also wanted to see if Jesse and his family would truly accept her.
A vase sat on her living room table. She usually ordered fresh flowers online and arranged them herself. It brightened up the place and made her home feel elegant.
She walked over, took out the flowers that were starting to wilt, and arranged the roses and baby’s breath Jesse had brought. The bouquet looked beautiful.
Once she was satisfied, Laura turned around, put down the insulated lunchbox, and waved Jesse over to the dining table. She headed into the kitchen and brought out the breakfast she’d made earlier.
“Isabella has to eat light these next few days, so the breakfast is kind of plain. I hope you don’t mind.”
