Jesse grinned. “I’m not picky. Something light for breakfast is perfect.”
He knew the meal wasn’t made just for him. He was only lucky enough to benefit from Isabella’s situation, but Laura had cooked it herself. Honestly, Jesse thought it was the best breakfast he’d ever tasted.
When he finished eating, Jesse looked at Laura. “Want me to go with you to the hospital?”
“Jesse, don’t you have work today?”
He gathered his dishes and took them to the kitchen, rinsing them under the faucet. “I don’t start until nine.”
Back before he met her, Jesse always got to work by eight. But after he fell for Laura and started trying to win her over, he pushed his start time back an hour. He even tried to avoid any evening events, just to free up more time to spend with her.
Melissa said she was cutting him some slack, but if he failed to win Laura’s heart, she’d dump every single work event on him. She even threatened to step aside and hand The Mason Group over to him, saying if he got his heart broken, he could just throw himself into work. Jesse thought that was pretty twisted.
Laura didn’t say anything else.
They went to the hospital together.
Isabella had already eaten, but since Laura got up early to make breakfast for her, she still had a little more, not wanting to turn down Laura’s kindness.
Laura decided to stay at the hospital with Isabella. Jesse hung around for a bit, then headed off to The Mason Group.
Twenty minutes later, Jesse got out of the elevator. His secretary came up to him. “Jesse, Harold’s here. He’s been waiting in the VIP lounge for half an hour. Not sure what he needs.”
Jesse hadn’t planned any meetings with Harold that day.
Harold had shown up early and waited outside Jesse’s office. The secretary tried to ask what he was there for, but Harold didn’t say a word.
Jesse and Harold were good friends and saw each other a lot. But on workdays, unless it was for business, they usually minded their own schedules and only caught up after hours. It was weird for Harold to show up so early and just wait around.
“Sure thing.”
Inside his office, Jesse led Harold over to the sofa.
“Ethan’s looking into what happened. You don’t have to wear yourself out. You look like you’ve lost weight in just two days.”
Harold had secretly been investigating the kidnapping too. He felt awful for Isabella and wished he could be there for her, but he just couldn’t. The only time he saw her was yesterday when everyone went together.
He was busy, trying to keep his feelings in check, but the past couple of days had been rough.
“How could I lose weight in two days? It’s not like it’s been two months,” Harold said with a small laugh. “I’ve just been tied up with a new project, that’s all.”
He wasn’t about to admit he’d spent most of his energy chasing down leads about the kidnapping.
