Natalie and Isabella never really got along, but Ethan couldn’t believe Natalie would ever go so far as to hire a hitman. That was murder. No matter how clever the plan, the police would find out eventually, and the punishment would be death. Natalie was smart and well-educated. She knew the law and wouldn’t risk everything just because of a petty grudge with Isabella.
Still, when Ethan thought about it, he couldn’t think of anyone else except his mother, Sophia, or Natalie who hated Isabella enough to wish she was gone or who was so jealous of her beauty.
“In my dream, all I saw was Cynthia. She couldn’t handle the pain and jumped off a building after Isabella died. That’s when I woke up. I never saw who was really behind it all,” Ethan said, rubbing his forehead in frustration. “Isabella actually threw a pillow at me to wake me up. Otherwise, maybe I’d have seen more. I might just go back to sleep and see if I can pick up the dream where I left off.”
Stephanie sat in silence for a long time, then finally looked at Ethan. “Ethan, let’s just say, for argument’s sake, that Natalie really did something to Isabella. What would you do?”
“Grandma, it couldn’t be Natalie. She’d never do something like that. Murder? She wouldn’t even kill a chicken, let alone a person.”
“I’m just asking a ‘what if,’” Stephanie said, her lips pressed together.
“You’re always like this,” she went on, “Anytime Natalie comes up, you lose all sense. No wonder Isabella insists on getting a divorce. With your attitude, honestly, anyone would want out.”
“You think Natalie’s really so innocent? She doesn’t kill chickens because she’s never had to. If the time came, she’d do it. She could probably kill a cow if she had to.” Stephanie shook her head. “She’s always been fake. I told you before, she was fine as a friend, but you shouldn’t have fallen for her. Now, no matter what she does, you just let it slide.”
Ethan was always so forgiving with Natalie, but when it came to Isabella, he was so much colder.
“You all came inside and saw Natalie from behind. If Natalie threw herself down those stairs, it would be easy for everyone to assume Isabella did it.”
“Ethan, you really don’t get how devious women can be. Their tricks aren’t always obvious, but sometimes, they leave the other person with no way to defend themselves.”
Stephanie had spent her whole life surrounded by wealthy families. She’d seen plenty of ugly games between women.
“The Isabella in your dream really loved you, but she was also unwilling to let go. She was foolish. When she found out you didn’t love her and were just using her, she should have stopped trying. She should have divorced you and moved on. If she’d left you sooner, maybe she’d still be alive. Ethan, when Isabella said you ruined her, she wasn’t wrong.”
